Everyone has a passion, whether it’s for sports, writing, math, science, or music, and that passion proves to stand out. Following this passion and devoting time to the things one loves most will make them overall more happy and positive. For junior Emma Moyer, this passion is singing, and as she began to devote more time to choir, she has noticed herself become happier and more positive to others in her life.

Beginning at a young age, Moyer enjoyed music and was involved in chorus as early as elementary school. She did not realize that music was her passion, however, until she saw the choir at the high school perform when she was in ninth grade.

“I never realized my specific passion for choir until I went to the high school’s spring concert, and as soon as they started singing this piece called ‘I Thank You God’ by Eric Whitacre, I just immediately fell in love. It was nothing like I’ve ever heard before, and it pushed me to go into the world of choral music,” remembered Moyer.

Moyer wishes to continue with choir in the future since it makes her so happy. She is constantly learning from and being inspired by music. She enjoys every aspect of music whether it be the history, theory, or performance. Since she puts so much emotion into music, she is able to make others emotional and connect with her audience, which she loves to do. Moyer’s audience can always tell that she is enjoying herself and she is always able to make her audience happy.

“One thing I love about performing is not just having people hear my voice. When I’m performing in a choir, people often tell me ‘I love your facial expressions when you sing,’ and it just makes me happy knowing that other people can connect with me through music, and I can connect with the audience as well,” explained Moyer.

Moyer draws her positive attitude from music and how much she enjoys it. She focuses on what she loves which makes her an overall more happy and positive person. Although Moyer does not see herself as positive to herself, she tries give off positivity to others. Her passion for music and how cheerful it makes her inspires Moyer to want others to be as cheerful as she is.

Moyer also is very comfortable talking to people she does not know. She has loved talking to people her whole life since she loves to learn about people and make friends. She enjoys the feeling of talking to someone and feeling like she made their day better. Since she feels so comfortable performing in front of an audience and trying to connect with people that way, it is easy for her to talk to people one on one.

Moyer encourages others to have some faith in themselves. When she first discovered that she loved choir, she never imagined that she would come as far as she has. Her sophomore year, she doubted that she would get into women’s choir, but she did get in as well as getting into chamber singers and making all state choir two years in a row.

“What people have to realize is that if you have a passion and you know it’s what you love, all you have to do is work hard and just keep on working. One day you will get to where you want to be and all the work will be totally worth it,” Moyer encouraged.

Happiness can be found through spending time on things one loves to do and working hard for what they want. If one is happy in what they are doing, they will have a more positive outlook, like Moyer. Moyer learned to believe in herself and not compare herself to others and that has inspired her positivity as well as her constant drive to keep improving. Moyer loves seeing herself get better and better at what she loves and is constantly trying to learn new things.

“Do not compare yourself to other people. It will make you think you are worse than you actually are. Just focus on your improvement. Try to keep on improving every single day. Keep trying to find new things to improve upon. Nobody’s ever the best; Nobody’s perfect. If you think you have nothing else to learn then you’re wrong,” Moyer stated.
