Looking to enjoy live music at a local location for free? Well look no further, because North Penn High School will be hosting two huge events in the upcoming weeks. First, the annual Knight of Jazz on Friday, February 27th at 6:10 pm held in the NPHS auditorium. Then taking place the following day is Knight of Guard and Percussion on Saturday, February 28th at 3 pm held in the NPHS main gym.

NPHS will be hosting eight area high school bands in competition at Knight of Jazz. Five of North Penn’s own will also be performing in exhibition, including the Navy and Columbia high school jazz bands and each middle school jazz ensemble.

Mr. David DiValentino, the director of the NPHS Navy Jazz Ensemble and Pennbrook/Pennfield jazz bands, truly enjoys seeing and speaking with students and directors from other bands through the night.

“Jazz and big band music was meant to bring people together, and that’s what the Knight of Jazz does,” said DiValentino.

The Navy Jazz Ensemble is the most prestigious jazz group a musician can get involved with. DiValentino holds the auditions, looking for musicians who really care about the music that they are performing. “Not only is the musicianship of the student important, it is also how well the students prepare and execute their role in the ensemble.”

The following evening, Knight of Guard and Percussion will be featuring multiple high school indoor color guard and percussion units in the competition. The event, sponsored by USBands, will also be highlighting NPHS’s Winter Percussion and North Penn Middle Schools’ “Knight Vision” visual ensemble in exhibition. Tickets are available in advance in the NPHS K-pod reception office for $10 or at the door.

All involved are very excited for the both upcoming events, and hope they have huge turnouts. So don’t forget, mark your calendars for February 27th at 6:10 pm for Knight of Jazz and February 28th at 3 pm for Knight of Guard and Percussion.
