Tallie Smink: A Leader on and off the Field

Tallie Smink: A Leader on and off the Field

At North Penn High School, leadership isn’t just about titles. It’s about consistency, and impact. For one senior student-athlete in particular, those qualities show up daily on and off the field and court.

“I’m a senior here at North Penn” Smink said.  “I was a captain on the field hockey team this year and the basketball team for two years. I’m also a captain on the softball team as well.”

Her high school career at North Penn has been filled with unforgettable moments, which she gave her credit to the teams she has been on.

“For softball, my favorite memory, was winning the state championship with my sister my freshman year. It was just a cool experience,” Smink said.

“For basketball my favorite memory was during the state playoffs we had a buzzer beater win. It was really far away and so we had a fun bus ride home.” Smink explained.

“As for Field Hockey my favorite memory has to be from this year, our Alex Ominade Cancer Game there was just so much support,” Smink said. “It was a good fun game, but we were also playing for a cause.”

Her experience at North Penn has not only been about sports. She also values the people she met in the classroom.

“My favorite teacher has to be my government teacher, Mr. Roberts. He was just very connected to everyone and always wanted to know how you were doing on a personal level,” Smink explained. “It wasn’t always about how you did on tests.”

Outside of school, her biggest inspiration seemed to be the ones she spent most of her time with.

“I look up to my sister a lot,” said Smink. “I’ve always followed in her footsteps. I just feel like I’ve always wanted to be like her.”

Next year, Tallie plans to take her academic and athletic talents to Shippensburg University, where she plans to continue playing softball.

“I am looking forward to playing with my former North Penn teammates. I’m excited to play with them again,” Smink said. “I got to play with them before, so I am excited to go far in the season with them.”

One of the toughest things athletes struggle with is balance between sports, school, and social life have always been one of the biggest challenges, but also it is something you can build open.

“Playing sports all year round helps you balance,” Smink explained. “You’re getting home late, so you have to manage your time just knowing what you have to accomplish that night.

As a captain on the top-ranked softball team in Pennsylvania, she focuses on mindset as much as performance.

“You kind of just have to have a next play mentality,” Smink  said. “Being number one in the state is a really good honor, but our team is very humble we don’t brag about it.”

Even beyond athletics, she’s helped shape school heritage.

“I run the student section account with two other people,” Smink said. “It was definitely difficult at times but it was fun because you got to pick theme for the game.”

A message Smink seemed to say is that “It’s just about managing your time and doing what you need to do.” And through that mindset, she’s not only succeeded at North Penn, but definitely showed the efforts of balancing leadership, academics, and confidence.
