The Souderton Indians and North Penn Knights’ coaches and captains meet before the game for the coin toss.

SOUDERTON- Where were you in 1989? Were you even alive, let alone even thought of yet? This ‘89 season was the last time Souderton found themselves on the winning side of a football game against the Knights from North Penn.

The Knights (7-0) came out with the 29-27 narrow victory on the road against the Souderton Indians (3-4).  The Knights win streak over Souderton will continue for at least another year and their undefeated record for at least another game.

After leading the Indians at halftime by a score of 44-16 in the week 8 matchup they had against each other in the 2017 season, many believed it would be an easy win for Knights. But those thoughts were shot down quick after the Knights gave up 17 unanswered points. The Knights then started their comeback trail.  Solomon Robinson connected to Jon Haynes for a 59-yard passing touchdown with 4:32 left in the first half.

Airing out the ball downfield was a prominent part of the senior quarterback’s plan for the game, and Robinson, who was 3 for 5 passing with 133 total passing yards on the night, mentioned the preparation he had coming into the contest.

“After a rough performance last week, this week at practice we were really focused on our passing and I felt it really helped in the game tonight,” said Robinson.

The first half would wrap up with North Penn senior Shamar Edwards, finding the end zone with a 3-yard run across the goal line and a 40-yard field goal made by Souderton junior, William Leyland that sent both teams into the locker room with the Indians up 20-14.

Even though the Knights had a slow and sloppy start to the ball game with 2 fumbles and a botched extra point attempt, the boys in white and Columbia blue went into halftime knowing that their drive and toughness would take care of the deficit they found themselves in going into the 2nd half.

“We felt good coming out of halftime, I felt Solomon had a little more confidence throwing the ball and continued to talk to him about letting our receivers make some plays we all know they are capable of,” said Knights Head Coach Dick Beck.

Similar positive vibes were felt by the players as well, when heading into the locker room at halftime with the opposition leading by 6.

“(Coach Beck) told us to keep fighting and to continue what we do every week, we fight and we don’t give up until we get what we come for whether we are at home, or on the road,” explained Knight’s Junior Evan Spann, who would record 2 receptions for 74 yards receiving.

The opening drive for North Penn in the second half included a 43-yard pass, catch and run from Robinson to Spann which put North Penn three yards away of their first lead in the game. At 9:19 left in quarter number three, Coach Beck’s halftime message to his players seemed to fully sink in as Edwards pounced his way into the end zone for his second touchdown on the night bringing not only the Knight’s sideline, but student section to a full applause for a loud roar on the away side. North Penn would never look back after taking the lead, as they would ride out the 3rd quarter on top over the Indians by a score of 21-20, and then 29-27 as the final seconds ticked away in the 4th.

“It surely will be great having this win’s momentum going into our next game, 7-0 is a great feeling, but we gotta keep improving. We didn’t start out the way we wanted to, but it’s all about how we finish and we finished tough tonight,” stated North Penn Senior and Captain, Julian White.

Between Seniors, Julian White, Shamar Edwards, and Solomon Robinson, the Knights’ run game recorded an average of 4 yards per run, three touchdowns and two 2-point conversions among the total of 40 rushing attempts in the game. The spark these players apply in the back field and out of the pocket are only comparable to one thing according to full back Julian White.

“Thunder and lightning baby. Me and Shamar running the ball along with Solomon controlling the huddle and the O-Line working hard for us too. Everything’s coming together and we are a tough team ready for our next matchup against CB West at home,’ said Julian White.

The Knights play next Friday, the 12th, back at home against Central Bucks West in the annual Childhood Cancer Awareness game hosted at Crawford Stadium.
