WRESTLING- Amir Pickins takes the mat on Wednesday January 31st,

TOWAMENCIN- A majority of the North Penn wrestlers (5-0) put on their uniforms just to walk across the mat during their match against Central Bucks South (0-5) on January 31st. For the wrestlers who actually had an opponent to wrestle, they were able to get some pins and rack up more points than CB South, winning 64 -16.

“The wrestlers did a pretty good job tonight. In the matches that we wrestled we beat them 22-16, so it was a good match,” said Head Coach Robert Shettsline.

After three forfeits, the Knights were already up 18-0 before a player was able to wrestle an opponent. Junior Amir Pickens got pinned down after fighting three hard rounds, letting South get on the scoreboard.

Senior Ryan Cody was the next wrestler to get on the mat, after three more forfeits, bringing the Knights to 36-6. Within the first round, Cody was able to pin his opponent quickly. The Knights were dominating the floor, and sophomore Alec Schrum pinned his opponent in only two rounds.

“I though the team did pretty well with the atmosphere we were given. We knew we were going to be given a lot of forfeits, so we knew we only had a couple guys going. With such a limited amount of guys going, we all wrestled pretty hard. Even without the forfeits we would have won the match, which is nice to know,” said Cody.

Freshman Nophir Harrell fought a hard match but was pinned in the first round, and South finally got on the scoreboard again (48-12).

“We are always trying to improve, even if you pin a guy and win. I think what we can work on next week is getting bonus points. Next week, since CB East has a full line up, we will need all the points we can get,” said Cody.

The Knights went back and forth for the next three matches. Junior Mahedi Hasan earned four points for the team after earning the most amount of points in his match. Dominating the whole match until the last round, sophomore Jarret Neibosik lost by points and South got 4 points added to the scoreboard (52-16). Quickly getting those point back, in one round junior Erik Laughlin pinned his opponent driving the score to (58-16). Another forfeit by South ended the match, getting the Knights 6 more points on the scoreboard.

“The next match won’t be as many forfeits. We wrestle CB East for the title here next week. We will have the kids psyched up for that match and hopefully we win the title. The guys need a little more quickness. Some of those guys are young and a little bit in experienced, so we have that to work on. Just giving them mat time though will help that. We had a hard practice yesterday, knowing some of the top wrestlers would get the forfeit. So today is like their day off, and we just have to get ready for East,” said Coach Shettsline.

The Wrestling team is at back home next Wednesday February 7th, for both senior night and the League Championship.
