Water Polo Says Goodbye to Seniors, Defeats Upper Perk

Water+Polo+Says+Goodbye+to+Seniors%2C+Defeats+Upper+Perk

TOWAMENCIN – While the rain was coming down outside, the Maidens water polo team was making their own splases inside as they waved good-bye to their seniors.  The girls knew that a win would be a perfect way to wish their seniors off, and that is just what they achieved.  Going up against Upper Perkiomen High School Monday afternoon, the Maidens played hard and erned the 8-2 victory.

Before the celebration for the seniors started, the Maidens took on Upper Perk.  The girls started off with fire in their eyes taking several shots, coming close but missing.  Within a few minutes they were on the board with the first shot scored by senior, Brittney Patterson.  Less than a minute later, senior captain, Jenn Halcovage scored making it 2-0.  After strong defense and multiple saves by goalie Kat Perkins, another point was added by captain Aspen Trautz 3-0 at the end of the first quarter.

With several seconds left in the second quarter, captain Tess O’Neill scored making it 4-0.   When half time was over, and with 3:00 left in the third quarter, senior Becca Hoch added another point to the board.  The Maidens continued to defend and block, not allowing Upper Perk to score.  In the fourth quarter, senior Karlie Vogt scored another point making it 6-0.

After numerous outstanding blocks by Perkins, one Upper Perk shot got through making it 6-1.  The Maidens quickly responded adding two more points.  One shot was taken under pressure by senior Molly Flannery and another by senior Gabby Friday.  These points allowed the score to go up 8-1, in the last 2:00 minutes of the fourth quarter.  Upper Perk managed to score one last shot but they were no match for the senior led Maidens, making the final score 8-2.  The senior girls really stepped it up to get this win for the team.

“We tried to work the ball around so all our seniors could get a shot for our final night at North Penn High School” stated Halcovage.

This win gave the seniors a sense of accomplishment.  As their names were called and the seniors proudly walked beside their parents, the strong support was clearly apparent.  The senior boys are Alex Chasar, David Franco, David Jordan, Shane Owens, Stephen Rowland and Justin Vererka.  The senior girls are Molly Flannery, Gabby Friday, Jenn Halcovage, Becca Hoch, Tess O’Neill, Brittney Patterson, Aspen Trautz, and Karlie Vogt.

After the last name was called, Halcovage reflected on the night stating, “it’s bittersweet , it’s kind of good [referring to winning the game] because it’s our last time as seniors andwe have been here for a while, but it’s also kind of sad because it’s our last game and we don’t get to come back and play in our own pool.”
