The road to 270 was too close
On November 7th, after an anxious week of awaiting the results of the 2020 presidential election, Democratic candidate, Joe Biden, was announced as the 46th President of the United States. With Pennsylvania pushing him over 270 electoral votes on Saturday morning, Biden achieved victory with a total of 290 electoral votes and over 75 million votes cast by the American people. While Biden is projected to win the presidency, it was not the electoral college landslide that was hoped for. With over 70 million people voting for his opponent and current president, Donald Trump, there’s only one question that remains. What does this tell us about where America sits as the year 2020 draws to a painstakingly slow close?
While voter turnout in states such as Texas, Hawaii, Washington, and Montana proved to greatly exceed that of 2016’s, the popular vote remained uncomfortably close the entire week. According to data collected by the United States Elections Project, the number of mail-in ballots cast predictably exceeded the number of those cast in the 2016 election. And not only that, but the early vote actually surpassed half of the number of votes counted during the 2016 election. This means that about 67% of people within the voter-eligible population turned out to vote in 2020.
With so many Americans having voted this year, one would think that the election would have been at the most, a landslide, but at the least, a clear victory. Instead, America sat on the edge of its seat, watching the rise and fall of numbers and percentages for both candidates. An almost 50/50 election means that half of the people that one passes on the street could have differing political views from one another. In this election specifically, the painful disagreement between Americans on the topic of basic human rights remained hot. Putting that into perspective again, half of the people a member of the LGBTQ+ community passes or half of the people that a minority woman passes on a daily basis, want to deprive them of their rights.
It is not wrong to say that America, while reaching a record high in voter-turnout, is more divided than it has ever been before. For groups of people such as the LGBTQ+ community, women, people of color, and immigrants, who suffered under the Trump presidency, it is harrowing to see just how many people in America voted for another 4 years of an administration constantly working towards taking away marriage rights, reproductive healthcare rights, and asylum for immigrants.
While Biden, along with his inclusive views and policies, will be entering the White House on January 20th, 2021, it remains to be seen that the views of the majority in this election will ultimately end up being thwarted by the so-far Republican-controlled Senate. Unfortunately for many, it is clear that politics are not just about the economy or gun rights any longer, but the rights of underrepresented Americans who face discrimination in a divided country every single day. I will always attribute this change to Donald Trump, the man who politicized a pandemic, and I believe that because of this, the majority of Americans were ready to make a change and have successfully done so by electing Joe Biden. It is important to celebrate the changes made thus far, but it is also important to hold those who voted for racism, sexism, transphobia, and xenophobia accountable.
America can not move forward as a country if there remains an ugly, deep-rooted hatred for those who are not white, Christian males. It is time to put the dark years of the Trump presidency behind us and start to educate ourselves on issues that not only affect us personally but issues that affect other large groups of people in this country. It is time to stop the selfishness and start to embrace inclusivity and equality for all while simultaneously working together to create a once again united country.

Hey “anonomous” above me. Number 1) Spell anonymous right. Number 2) According to Kate Bedingfield Biden’s “reference to xenophobia was about Trump’s long record of scapegoating others at a time when the virus was emerging from China” not the bans. The long awaited reason for him to bash other’s for their race and simply coming into what you call a “free” country. A lockdown would save lives, businesses could fail, but lives would still be saved. Also I believe bashing poll workers is a very rude way to say that you don’t think the election is over. Those people worked extremely hard and their work will not be discredited over fake fraud people claim to have seen. It’s poll workers right to want the watchers to be further away, just because you couldn’t see the votes up close and personal doesn’t mean they were for one candidate or another. Making them stand 25 feet away isn’t fraud. Also, you know someone who’s vote wasn’t counted? Okay. Were they registered correctly? Did they do a mail in ballot or vote in person? If it was a mail-in ballot did they do the correct procedure to place it in the envelope. Just because their vote wasn’t counted doesn’t mean it’s because they voted for Trump. Biden didn’t “mysteriously” start winning in Michigan. We knew from the beginning that mail-ins would be counted later, and that most mail-ins would be democratic because Donald Trump told his followers to vote in person instead. It’s not mysterious it’s just how democracy works. The 15,000 “mysterious” votes that disappeared failed to meet qualifications. Most likely as your friend’s ballot did. Covid wise, 250,000 deaths doesn’t sound like a very good job to me. Many could’ve been avoided if we didn’t rush a re-opening. A second lockdown would’ve never been in question if we stayed in the first one for long enough, ask New Zealand, who closed from March 16th to June 8th, with testing procedures and mandatory masks and social distancing. Now with little to zero Covid. When we say “holding trump supporters accountable” I mean, holding them accountable for supporting a man who was friends with Jeffrey Epstein. A man who told an Asian reporter to “ask china” about where the virus came from. A man who talked about a 10 year old and said “can you believe I’ll be dating her in 10 years.” A man who nominated a supreme court justice who’s against gay rights. Donald Trump is only not offensive to cis straight white males. It wasn’t about how Joe seems “sleepy.” It’s been about change our country needs right now.

I disagree. Trump does not want to take away gay marriage and most republicans including me don’t either.
As for reproductive rights, killing a baby is not a reproductive right. Legal immigrants are fine, but we can’t allow illegal immigrants into our country. They’ll increase taxes and take our jobs and could end up increasing crime. Trump did handle corona virus well, he banned travel to and from China to slow the spread even though Joe called it “Xenophobic.” We can’t live are lives in a bubble and have a nation wide lock down. That would infinge on our freedoms and destroy the economy. Also keep in mind this election seems like it has lots of corruption so trump still has a chance. The corruption is wide spread to. 15,000 mysterious Biden votes in Minnesota, states where trump is winning by a vote that stopped counting then Biden suddenly winning them, in Philadelphia the people working with ballots in this big voting area would not allow people within 25 feet so when the republicans took it to court they played wise guy, and I even know someone whos vote wasn’t counted yet and he voted for Trump. And what exactly do you mean by hold Trump supporters accountable? We did nothing wrong, we just want one of the best presidents of all time to win the election. And if this comment is censored this entire article should be censored. No double standards.

Biden will be a great president!

@ Annonymous !
May I ask exactly what you mean by “woman’s rights?” If you are referring to abortion, that is not a “woman’s right”, to a conservative. Now I am not trying to get into a debate about whether or not abortion is okay, I am rather trying to imply that not believing in abortion does NOT make someone misogynist. They see it as allowing a baby to live, rather than “woman’s rights” or “just a clump of cells”. Again, different views, not misogynist. Also, Amy Coney Barrett may not support gay marriage, because of her religion, but that does NOT mean she will take away LGBTQ+ rights. She hasn’t yet said anything about taking away gay marriage rights (at least from what I heard; please show a reliable source if I am wrong) and we have the freedom of religion in America, so she has the right to strictly follow her religion and not support gay marriage WITHOUT letting that affect others and her government decisions and WITHOUT taking away the right of gay marriage. And Donald Trump did in fact denounce white supremacy. Rewatch the debate. Also what exactly is Joe Biden’s plan to defeat the coronavirus? He claimed “We can’t fix the economy until we fix the virus”, but then he also said something along the lines of getting jobs back to normal while also maintaining social distancing guidelines (contradicting what he previously said). Trump didn’t treat it as a “hoax”. Even Dr. Fauci agrees that he was just approaching it with optimism. Trump shouldn’t have said that about his daughter, but obviously he wasn’t being serious. And he didn’t know the other thing he said was being recorded for the world to see. (Again, he should NOT have said it, but he was NOT being serious). At least Donald Trump doesn’t sniff women and children. Sniffing innocent people’s hair is not “simple human decency”. Joe Biden would be a better shampoo tester than president.

@Jerry R
Would you rather have someone in office who simply doesn’t even realize that America is supposed to be a secular country? Donald Trump lets religion impose on politics which is simply everything our country was built to stand against. It was an election to pick the lesser of two evils and it’s pretty obvious which was the lesser. Towards the end of his reign in office, he has elected a disgusting Supreme Court Justice with hardly any experience. He put Amy Coney Barret in the Supreme Court, knowing that she stands against gay rights and simple woman’s rights. If that doesn’t scream misogyny or homophobia to you, or that’s not a deal breaker for you, I think you don’t believe in a free country, you believe in a free country for cis white males. At least Joe Biden can denounce white supremacy without a “but.” At least Joe Biden can have a plan to defeat the Corona Virus without calling it a hoax. At least Joe Biden hasn’t said that he’d date his daughter. At least Joe Biden hasn’t said to grab women by the… you know the rest. At least Joe Biden has simple human decency.

Joe Biden’s been in government for 20% of America’s existence and hasn’t done anything but oppress minorities with outrageous stands on issues (1994 Crime Bill, voted against bussing, pro Don’t ask, don’t tell, etc). The people who voted for Trump aren’t racist Russian assets, but people who were heavily suffering from the corrupt reign of Obama and Bush. Joe Biden will NEVER get rid of fracking, or give us $15 minimum wage, or impose regulations on corporations for destroying our environment, or give the poor sick citizens Medicare for all!

@Anonymous,
There are multiple fact-checking websites that look at Joe Biden quotes that are taken out of context and correct them. The truth is just a click away. The full quote does not read nor match your interpretation of the small snippet you picked out. This is an opinion piece but the statistics speak for themselves. The United States is divided. Half of the people in this country DID choose to back a President who only cares for the basic human rights of white, Christian males. If you so choose, you can claim not to be racist, not to be homophobic, or whatever you please. But, those who voted for Trump decided that those factors, racism, homophobia, and blatant bigotry, were not “vile” enough to pull back their support from him. The leader of this country did not stand for all. He does not stand for POC, he does not stand for LGBTQ+, he does not stand for women, he does not stand for the disabled, and the poor. His entire campaign was based on the phrase “I will build a wall.” He wouldn’t immediately or clearly denounce white supremacy and he has white supremacists fully backing his campaign. It’s your right not to agree or approve of Joe Biden, but in 2020 the fact that there are still people willing to elect the LEADER of our country to be someone who only supports a fraction of the residents living in it is utterly ignorant. It’s our civic duty to set aside Democrat v.s. Republican and make a decision based on who best represents the entire nation. I’m deeply disheartened and disappointed that in 2020 basic and fundamental human rights for all are still a debate. That is what this opinion piece highlights; the disappointment and frustration of witnessing half a nation stand with a man who if he wasn’t the president, would be in prison.

@Anonymous I believe what she meant was, by supporting the Trump Administration, you are supporting the deep rooted problem of racial oppression. About the “racial jungle” quote. I will admit that Joe Biden has many down sides, but this quote is just simply taken out of context. Biden said “Unless we do something about this, my children are going to grow up in a jungle, the jungle being a racial jungle with tensions having built so high that it is going to explode at some point.” Talking about integration He is simply stating that the world cannot go on like this with racial injustice. This was all during a court case about school busing and desegregation in schools. I understand how you could understand that quote alone, but an easy google search can give you the real context.

Really? Because they didn’t support Biden, a man who backed “don’t ask, don’t tell,” created the 1994 crime bill, and said he did not want his children going to school in an integrated “racial jungle,” half of the people in this country want to deprive minorities and LGBT people of human rights? Everyone who is not a Democrat hates everyone but white, Christian males? You spew these incredibly vile and divisive lies about half the nation and then talk about wanting to create a “unified country.” Absolutely delusional.
