Trump becomes 45th President of the United States

At noon on a rainy Friday afternoon, Donald Trump placed his left hand on two Bibles and pledged to preserve , protect, and defend the constitution, thus becoming the 45th President of the United States of America. He then delivered a 16 minute speech, reviving his campaign slogan and spouting pure economic nationalism. An hour later, Trump moved to the Capitol for a lunch with Congress. During the Capitol luncheon afterwards, the new President stated he was honored the Clintons were in attendance, making no mention of them earlier in his inauguration speech. Just blocks from Trump’s inaugural parade, protesters were fighting against police officers, smashing windows and lighting a limo on fire. Two police officers were injured and 95 were arrested.

Usain Bolt loses Olympic gold medal

30 year old Usain Bolt completed an unprecedented ‘triple triple’ in Rio 2016, becoming the only man to win all three sprint events at all three of the Olympic Games. Unfortunately, he no longer holds this record. On Wednesday, Jamaican teammate Nesta Carter tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance, disqualifying the 2008 Beijing Caribbean Island’s sprint team. All four members of the team, Asafa Powell, Michael Frater, Carter, and Bolt, all lost their titles. Traces of methylhexaneamine, classified as a “specified substance” and used as an ingredient in dietary supplements, were found in Carter’s sample when 454 others from the Beijing Games were retested last year. Usain Bolt has stated he will retire from athletics after the 2017 World Championships in London.

A bill to begin Britain’s separation from the European Union was introduced on Thursday to parliament. The bill was introduced by Brexit secretary, David Davis, and it called for members of parliament to “confer power on the Prime Minister to notify… the United Kingdom’s intention to withdraw from the EU.” Prime Minister Theresa May said she wants to trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, the mechanism through which Brexit will officially begin, by by the end of March. “The British people have made the decision to leave the EU and this government is determined to get on with the job of delivering it,” said Davis, according to statement. On Wednesday, May announced that her government would produce a White Paper mapping out the detail of its Brexit plan after several MPs pressured them that the public was kept in the dark about the process. On Thursday, MPs demanded that the White Paper would be available to them before voting on the Article 50 legislation.

Mexican president cancels meeting with Trump

Mexican president Enrique Pena Nieto canceled a meeting with Donald Trump on Thursday. The meeting had been set for next week after renewed tensions exploded over the US President’s plan to build a wall on the border. “This morning we have informed the White House that I will not attend the meeting scheduled for next Tuesday with the POTUS,” Pena Nieto tweeted. Earlier Thursday morning, Trump tweeted that it would be better to skip the meeting entirely if Pena Nieto continued to say that Mexico would not pay for the wall, which is something the Mexican leader had said as recently as Wednesday evening.

21 killed after explosion outside hotel

Al-Shabaab, an al Qaeda-linked terror group, claimed responsibility for two explosions on Wednesday that killed at least 21 people outside the gates of a Somalian hotel. Attackers detonated a truck bomb outside of Dayah Hotel, which is near Somalia’s Parliament building and popular with lawmakers and government officials, before they stormed inside. A second truck nearby exploded 15 minutes later. The extremist group seeks to turn the country into a fundamentalist Islamic state and has carried out repeated attacks against the government and military targets.
