With a goal of collecting 10 boxes filled with toys, the Key Club is participating in the Toys for Tots fundraiser. Four collection boxes are located outside of Mrs. Law’s office.

TOWAMENCIN- As the holidays approach, the Toys for Tots charity is nearing the last few days of collection. For the 18 years that Mrs. Law has been the adviser of the Key Club, NPHS has been participating in Toys for Tots.

The NP Key Club, one of the largest Key Clubs in the area, collects and donates hundreds of toys every year to benefit the organization.

Right before Thanksgiving, former Marines Mr. John Cutrone and Mr. Howard Quinn brought empty Toys for Tots boxes to collect the donations from students and staff members.

Students also have the opportunity to earn community service hours by donating a toy; one large toy is equal to one hour of community service.

“The toys are counted as community service, because you are helping the community by supporting the children in our area,” explained Law.

As of now, the Marines have already picked up three full boxes of toys, and they are scheduled to pick up the final boxes between December 12th-14th. In the past, NPHS has been able to fill ten boxes, and that number remains as this year’s goal for the fundraiser.

The Toys for Tots charity holds many events where donations are made, and North Penn’s collecting is definitely beneficial.

“I feel honored that Key Club is able to help Toys for Tots, because it is such a great cause,” said Juliet Israel, Key Club Secretary.

With over 300 members, the Key Club’s size proves to support the success of the fundraiser.

“I think Toys for Tots is a such a great thing to be a part of and contribute to. I think it’s good for our school’s environment and appreciation for what we have and what we’re able to provide,” said Kristen Marks, Editor of Key Club.

After the collecting the donations, the Marines transport the gifts to their garage and sort the gifts by age group. A wide variety of gifts for different ages and genders are donated. Then parents or guardians have the opportunity to come in to pick the toys that they want for their children.

You never actually realize how lucky you are until you get a different perspective. Toys for Tots along with the Key Club in general really fuels that realization

— Kristen Marks, Editor of Key Club

“Something as simple as a holiday present could mean a lot to young children, so it’s amazing the amount of donations Key Club has gotten for the charity,” said Israel.

Discussing how the fundraiser has influenced her, Marks explained the significance of Key Club’s participation in the fundraiser.

“You never actually realize how lucky you are until you get a different perspective. Toys for Tots along with the Key Club in general really fuels that realization. It’s a really nice feeling knowing every toy you donate will be going to a child who is less fortunate than you and who really deserves it. I think Key Club taking part in the Toys for Tots organization is a big help and contributes so much,” said Marks.
