The North Penn Alumni Athletic Association held their Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Saturday, October 8th, recognizing the accomplishments of North Penn alumni.

TOWAMENCIN- From high school athletes to successful adults, the inductees at the North Penn Alumni Athletic Association enjoyed a night of reuniting with old teammates, sharing nostalgic memories with their families, and celebrating both past and present accomplishments.

The Hall of Fame Induction on Saturday, October 8th began with opening remarks by the president of the NPAAA, Tom Strickland. The focus of the night then shifted to the honoree Lifetime Achievement award recipient, Scott Moyer, class of ’81. Moyer, a decorated fighter pilot with awards illustrating his dedication to the military, reflected on his time as a North Penn Knight, who spent his Friday nights on the field at Crawford Stadium. His fondest memories included his teammates and family that constantly believed in him.

“You can be Michael Phelps or Katie Ledecky, but without your friends and family, you’re nothing,” stated Moyer in his acceptance speech.

Afterwards, swimmers, runners, kickers, basketball players and athletes who excelled in field events were inducted into the Hall of Fame. The 2016 NPAAA Hall of Fame inductees include swimmer Jeremy Bergman, hurdler and high jumper Jim Gulick, swimmer Steve Fleming, placekicker Brad Carroll, basketball player Jay Joseph, discus thrower Dick Loy, track star Dan Michael, and swimmer Bill Moser.

As these accomplished athletes reflected on their personal achievements, they recognized it was the support of their family, friends, and coaches that drove them to success.

“The person you see up here did not get here by himself. I had a lot of incredible support along the way,” said Bergman, who was a part of the 1999 undefeated men’s swim team.

Carroll, 8-time varsity letterman and placekicker, expressed his love for his supportive parents in a different but equally genuine way.

“They always had the best tailgates, too. The chicken cutlets, Mom; they were the best,” stated Carroll.

The inductees showcased their pride and gratitude to the North Penn School District and the abundance of opportunities and guidance that the district provided them. A few of the inductees are part of a longstanding tradition in which their parents and their children have also walked the halls of North Penn.

“North Penn delivered on every promise it ever made to me: quality education, dedicated leadership, caring, committed teachers and coaches, and great community support. I am beyond grateful for everything North Penn has done for me and my family,” said Gulick, one half of a father-son legacy of North Penn Hall of Fame athletes.

“I feel a tremendous benefit to have had to grow up in this community that supports education [and] supports athletics [and] to have so many wonderful teachers, mentors, coaches, and administrators to help along the way,” said Moser, whose daughter has also been inducted into the Hall of Fame. “I’m proud to be an alumni. I’m proud to be part of the legacy of the North Penn School District.”

As the evening came to a close, two North Penn teams were recognized: the suburban one league, district one, and PIAA state champions 1976 Boys Swimming and Diving team, along with the PIAA Class AAAA state champs 2009 baseball team. Both teams shared stories and memories and were honored by North Penn.

“There are some years where coaching is very difficult; this was not one of those years,” said head coach Bob McCreary of the 2009 baseball team’s success.

The ceremony was followed by refreshments in the sports lobby, where athletes and their families could socialize, catch up with old friends, and view the newly placed plaques in the Hall of Fame gleaming with their names.
