A little insight into… Curling

As we all know, curling is a relatively unpopular and ignored sport in the Winter Olympics. The difference between the size of the audience for curling versus the size of the audience for other sports like ice hockey, snowboarding, and figure skating is tremendous and certainly noticeable.

I don’t think the sport of curling gets that much attention by spectators of the Winter Olympics because there is not too much action going on as it is played and also because many people do not know the details of the sport, like the goals or objectives, what the circles and different colors mean, how the players’ shoes are sliding on the ice so easily, how many turns each team takes, or even what to call the round thing they are sliding across the ice.

Curling first entered the Winter Olympic Games in 1924, then became a demonstration sport on and off, and later in 1998 officially became a Winter Olympic sport again. The name for the round object that is slid across the ice is called a ‘stone’ or ‘rock’. This stone is made of granite and weighs approximately forty pounds. The scoring area with the red and blue circles is called the ‘house.’ The center circle is called the ‘button’ and is the direct target for the delivery of the stone. There are two teams that play in a game, and each throws eight stones. The goal of this sport is to be the team that ends up with the most stones as close to the button as possible. The separate intervals of play are called ‘ends,’ which is equivalent to the meaning of the term innings of baseball. Recreational games are played with eight ends, whereas tournaments are played with ten ends. As the stone is thrown by the curler, there are two sweepers on each side of the sliding stone that change the state of the ice that the stone is about to slide over with their brooms or sweepers. To a certain degree, the sweepers can control the path and length that the stone travels in order to try to have it stop as close to the button as possible. What gives the curler and the sweepers the ability to easily slide across the ice is a special curling or sliding shoe with a Teflon sole.

There are numerous rules, terminology, equipment, and strategies for the sport of curling. Although considered a strange and unpopular sport to many spectators, curling is seemingly beginning to grow in popularity in theUnited   Statesas its years in the Winter Olympics build up.
