The Word of Mitch Lord – Fantasy’s Penultimate Regular Season Edition

As a majority of the fantasy football leagues will be coming to an end this week, I feel obligated to discuss how my season went. The league I pay most attention to/care most about is a league with a bunch of my dad’s friends and I share the team with my brother. We won our first game by 40 points and then dropped five in a row. All hope was lost. Neither of us believed we would even make the playoffs. Now, as I write this column, we’re preparing for the championship game. Yes, after a horrid 1-5 start, we made a few moves here and there and went on to win seven in a row to close out the regular season (we entered the playoffs as the third seed). We escaped our first playoff game with a three-point victory and then smoked our second-round opponent (by 39) to earn a spot in the championship game. We owe a lot of that success to the block-buster trade we pulled off. After Week 7, my brother and I agreed if we wanted to make the playoffs we would have to make a trade; and we both knew who we were going to go after: Calvin Johnson. And Calvin Johnson is exactly who we got. We ended up dealing Frank Gore and Antonio Brown in exchange for Johnson. At the time, it seemed like a pretty fair trade, and I still believe, at the time, it was. Calvin simply added to our list of studs: Adrian Peterson, LeSean McCoy, Julio Jones, Jason Witten, Tony Romo, Pierre Garcon, and Cecil Shorts.
This season has been a great story. No matter how bad of a start you have, you can always turn things around. All it takes is one win, one good week, one good performance. I know it’s cliche, but it’s quite fitting: Never give up; you really never know what could happen.
Quarterbacks I love in Week 16
Tony Romo, Cowboys: He’s thrown for more than 300 yards in four of his last five games (he has also tossed 10 touchdowns over that span). This week he’ll be opposed by one of the most generous defenses in the league (New Orleans) and one that has surrendered 26 passing touchdowns this year.
Robert Griffin III, Redskins: Even if he’s not 100%, it’s the Eagles…
Quarterbacks I hate in Week 16
Eli Manning, Giants: He’s thrown just five touchdowns on the road this season, and just two in his past five road match-ups. He threw for a mere 161 yards last week with no touchdowns and two interceptions. I don’t have much confidence in him as of now.
Joe Flacco, Ravens: He’s been far too inconsistent this year to be worthy of a start.
Colin Kaepernick, 49ers: I understand he’s been impressive, but he’s playing in Seattle. The Seawhawks are allowing a league-best 9.8 points per game to opposing quarterbacks. They’ve allowed just 4 passing touchdowns in the past six games, compared to nine interceptions. I’d find another option.
Running backs I love in Week 16
Knowshon Moreno, Broncos: Since he became the starter again back in Week 12 when McGahee was put on IR, Moreno has been quite productive, especially in his last two games. Another plus is his favorable match-up this week: the Browns.
Jamaal Charles, Chiefs: Nine carries for 10 yards last week. It can only go up from here. I’m expecting a nice bounce-back performance this week against a poor run defense in Indianapolis.
Running backs I hate in Week 16
LeSean McCoy and Bryce Brown, Eagles: Brown has absolutely stunk the past two weeks and McCoy hasn’t played in four. I don’t trust either one of them yet.
Chris Johnson, Titans: When you look at his numbers from last week’s game, it would seem as if Johnson had a solid performance: 21 carries, 122 yards and a touchdown. Unfortunately, 94 of those 122 yards came on one run, meaning without that carry, he would have finished with 20 carries for 28 yards. Yikes.
Wide receivers I love in Week 16
Brandon Lloyd, Patriots: It’s a shame he couldn’t have performed like this for the entire season. But he’s been drawing a lot of attention from Tom Brady and a Jags secondary is going to do anything to slow his roll anytime soon.
Cecil Shorts, Jaguars: Shorts has been incredibly reliable this season and should without a doubt have every owner’s trust. He’s posted three 100-yard performances in his last five games (he also has 4 touchdowns in those 5 games). Shorts is the guy down in Jacksonville, and he should have no trouble exposing a soft New England secondary.
Julio Jones, Falcons: Roddy White got little love last week, and I see the same happening this week against the Lions. Jones has caught at least five balls in four straight games.
Wide receivers  I hate in Week 16
Michael Crabtree, 49ers: Like Kaepernick, Crabtree has experienced a lot of recent success, I just don’t see it continuing, especially with the 12th man present.
Hakeem Nicks, Giants: He’s surpassed the 100-yard mark just one time this season, and that was back in Week 2. If I don’t trust Eli, do you really I’m going to trust a guy who’s been as underachieving as Hakeem Nicks.
