Gotyes Got Philadelphians Listening With Their Ears Wide Open

UPPER DARBY: Last Friday night, lights flooded the Tower Theater’s stage for Gotye’s first performance in Philadelphia. With a sold out show, the audience, full of long-time fans, were excited to hear the, Australian based musicians eerie synthesized, yet soothing music.

Opening for Gotye was Kimbra, who accompanies him in the song “Somebody That I Used to Know.” Her smoky sound, Kimbra pulled in her audience with her fierce stage presence. Compared to Katy Perry, Florence and The Machine, and Bjork, Kimbra and her band intertwined the genres of pop and jazz to create an impressive full range of sound.  After performing a few songs of her album Vows, Kimbra’s stage was cleared to set up for Gotye’s performance.

Starting with his hit song “Eyes Wide Open,” Gotye got the crowd pumped for the rest of his performance. Performing songs from his album Making Mirrors and Like Drawing Blood, the award-winning artist was in his own world as he played his music, only really playing for the audience with the song “Somebody That I Used to Know.” As Gotye preformed, a different animated background for each song played behind him and his band, expressing the emotions of the songs.

Playing for an hour or so, Gotye came back out for his encore performance singing two upbeat songs, “In Your Light” and “I Feel Better,” which had the audience dancing even more then they did before.

A night full of diverse, unique sounds, Gotye and Kimbra had an amazing performance in Philadelphia, hopefully inspiring them to come back again soon.
