Motivation is something we all hope to have every day. Whether we get it from drinking coffee, going to bed early, or hanging out with friends, it is the driving force that helps us get through our day. For AAAC president Yordanos Lemma and club members, a sense of friendship and shared interests keeps them motivated.

Many students are searching for clubs to join after a slow start to the school year. One club is taking extra measures to promote themselves.

Under new leadership, the AAAC club is bringing more extensive and better things this year. Moving forward, African-American guest speakers will come to the club, give a Q and A, and tell their story of how they got to be successful (upon club members’ request). This allows everyone to hear how others struggle in their culture, creating a sense of community. Additionally, this year, they are planning a Friendsgiving within the club, showing off everyone’s gratitude and an end-of-the-year cookout, which they could not get to last year.

Food and public speakers are a big part of this club’s activities. This year, they are planning a Friendsgiving within the club, showing off everyone’s gratitude and an end-of-the-year cookout, which they could not get to last year.

This year, the AAAC club started a new program called Empowering Excellence. This program is specifically for students of color, who do not necessarily have the chances personally and academically that they would usually. It helps build skills for not only educational purposes but also for real-world purposes.

“A lot of people say it is very time-consuming and maybe even tiring to lead a club, but if you’re passionate about it and care about the topic it is honestly really fun and refreshing,” Lemma admitted

Each member gives off their ideas, and others listen with open ears. This creates a pleasant environment for the students who feel left out, culturally or socially, to let loose.

“We are all basically already friends, so it’s easy to get along and communicate with each other,” Lemma explained.

Even though allies are not a part of the African-American culture, they still significantly show everyone that anyone can be a part of the community, regardless of background.

“They aren’t a part of us, obviously cause they’re allies, but they are important to us because they contribute and show up sometimes,” Lemma stated.

AAAC club consists of many new opportunities for black students trying to get a voice for themselves while also having a thrilling time with people who look, sound, and act like them.

This club is a great way to learn, explore, and experience yourself in the school community with your peers. It could open doors and chances for you. You can join AAAC on the 5-star student app or contact Mr. Mostert for more information.
