Knights triumph in conference home opener against Indians

TOWAMENCIN – “We just kept our foot on the gas the entire game and didn’t let up,” explained senior boy’s basketball captain Noah Melchior on the North Penn Knights’ 74-63 victory over the Souderton Indians Friday night.

The North Penn boy’s basketball team got off to a strong start with an explosive offense lead by seniors Aaron Dean, Noah Melchior, and junior Joseph Richards. The Knights were able to create a fast paced offense to keep the Indians on their heels and were able to take advantage of free throws to allow North Penn to go into halftime with a 38-23 lead.

After half, Souderton came back seeking to close the point gap and came back strong. The Knights were able to hold off their attack with a trio of three pointers from Dean and Melchior, and continued to rack up the points with full team effort concluding with Knight’s senior James Edwards’ breakaway and slam dunk at the end of 4th quarter.

Coming back from an 0-2 start of their season, the Knight’s were focusing on sharpening their defensive and working better as a team.

“I don’t think we played very well the past two games. We didn’t play good team defense and we were selfish on the offensive end, so we were just worried about trying to be unselfish tonight,” stated head coach John Conrad.

“We started off the season kind of poorly, we were 0-2 and we got into practice and decided we were really going to lock down on defense,” Melchior added.

Commenting on the team’s overall performance Conrad stated “I thought we did a nice job defensively, we put them on the foul line too often, but other than that…I thought they played well and I thought they played hard.”

Despite this 0-2 start, the Knights look jump start their offense and begin playing more fluidly as a unit.

“I’m very proud of them; everyone play well and worked hard tonight and we have to keep doing that,” explained Dean.

“We have two big games next week, against tough teams…we really have to focus on defense and playing together and communicating and getting shots up and getting to the free throw line,” concluded Melchior.
