Knight Like – “Bad cable action movies”

Thomas Leffler

A few weekends ago, while waiting for the NBA playoffs to come on, I caught the last hour of the Will Smith movie I, Robot. Usually when movies come on, especially on cable channels, it’s just an excuse to fill timeslots on their new 24/7 schedules. However, I term movies like I, Robot the “bad cable action movie.” When I see them on, I grab the popcorn. Seeing Will Smith as a half-human, half-robot killing machine and a conspiracy about code among fellow robots? Count me in. After I finished it, I ended up putting the movie along with the John Travolta and Nicolas Cage classic Face/Off on the bad cable action movie wall of fame. Something needs to be said for the fantastic combination of cheesy one-liners, crazy explosions, and nonsense plots. If you’re looking to start somewhere with this genre, I would suggest the 1985 Arnold Schwarzenegger movie Commando, where Arnold avoids death with 100 rifles firing upon him. There’s a term out there that something is so bad that it’s good, and these movies definitely fit the bill.

Knight Dislike – Schoolwork

Joe LeConey

Being a second semester senior, school work has become one of my least favorite activities and has become a real challenge trying to complete. When I was an underclassman I always found it important to do my homework because it helped my grade and it helped me understand the material for an upcoming test. But, now I see homework as a burden and a curse, I used to be able to understand when teachers gave out assignments, but now whenever one of my teachers hands me a worksheet I want to either cry or jump out at them. Seeing that I have already committed to a college and started getting invitations to grad parties I feel as if my year should be over and I should just be cruising to the finish line. However, my teachers don’t agree with that and continue to hand out worksheets and test me on things that I don’t feel is necessary and important to me anymore. School work has become one of the biggest struggles for me in these past couple of months and finding schoolwork essential just seems to be impossible for me.
