High School Students – Too Old for Halloween?

Too old for Halloween? One is never too old for Halloween. Whether you are out trick-or-treating for yourself or making kids’ nights with giant candy bars, Halloween is fun for everyone. But when does a person become too old to trick-or-treat?

Halloween is commonly thought to be a holiday celebrating the day of the dead. However, for children it is a good excuse to dress up like princesses and super heroes and video game characters, knock on strangers’ doors, and ask for candy. For kids, this is great!
Everyone loves candy! Including teenagers. So the question then becomes, should teenagers continue to dress up and go door to door or should they stick to stealing their younger siblings’ candy when they aren’t looking?

“Teenagers are too old. Halloween is a holiday for kids to have fun and parents to make sure they’re safe. The older kids should participate, but not by begging for candy. If I know them well enough, I cut them off around 16 or 17 years old, because their world won’t be destroyed if they don’t get a Hershey bar. I’d rather not run out of candy for the children,” said a Towamencin Township resident. The opinion of neighbors such as this discourages some teenagers from trick-or-treating. However, others still love to dress up and go out and have a good time.

When asked if there is a cut-off age for trick-or-treating, another neighbor believes that, “Halloween is fun for everyone and should be fun for everyone. If you have the time to dress up, dress up. This is the one day a year that you truly don’t need to be yourself and I believe everyone, not just kids, has that right. I buy extra candy and even give some to the parents. Everyone should enjoy their Halloween,” and many others agree.

Most teenagers that I’ve spoken to seem to believe that Halloween is a good opportunity to spend time with friends, have a great night, and dress up as something other than yourself. For a lot of people, it’s not about the candy; it’s about the good time, although candy is never a bad thing.

As long as you have time and an amazing costume, you are never too old to trick-or-treat.
