The depths of flu season are in full effect in the United States. Last Friday, the Centers for Disease Control released their weekly report, where they officially named the influenza outbreak to be an epidemic. This time of year it can be difficult to stay healthy and focused when there is a bug going around. To make it through the season flu-free, the CDC has released tips on how to avoid the sickness and stay healthy during the 2017-2018 flu season.

The Center for Disease Control’s Tips for Flu Season

1. Get Vaccinated

From their study the CDC found that getting vaccinated “can reduce flu illnesses, doctors’ visits, and missed work and school due to flu, as well as prevent flu-related hospitalizations.” For the current epidemic it is recommended to not receive the nasal spray vaccination, and to instead get an injectable flu shot.

2. Avoid Close Contact

Staying away from people who may be sick, or vice versa, will subside the spreading of the flu.

3. Stay home when sick

Staying away from school or work when you are ill will stop the spreading of the illness to peers and coworkers.

4. Cover mouth and nose

Using the “vampire method” when coughing and sneezing will stop germs from becoming completely airborne and spreading to others in the vicinity.

5. Wash your hands

Using soap and water to wash your hands will get rid of any germs that may have been picked up.

6. Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, and nose

Being the most contaminated places when somebody is sick, avoiding touching these areas will keep the spread of germs at bay.

7. Practice good health habits

Cleaning surfaces that may have germs, getting enough sleep, getting the recommended amounts of exercise, eating nutritious foods, and drinking water are important steps to stay healthy and protected from the flu.
