The temps have gone into the 80s, the humidity level is above 50%, and North Penn feels like a sauna. It’s official: summer has begun. Even though school won’t let out for another two weeks, the change in weather has made a change in your daily beauty routine a necessity. Humidity wreaks havoc on hair, makeup feels as if it is melting off your face, and the sunburn lines can be unbearable – but there are a few tips and tools that can make the summer climate survivable and even enjoyable for your skin and hair.

The most crucial tool skin-wise is sunscreen. As much as you may want that Jersey Shore tan, ultimately the health of your skin, not only now, but in the future, is at risk, so take care to apply it whenever going outside for extended periods of time. Oftentimes lotions can be a bit more protective because of their thicker consistency compared to sprays. My personal favorite is Neutrogena’s line of lotions, because it not only nourishes but protects your skin. Their facial lotion also is generally better at not clogging your pores and being less oily. While a lot of foundations and facial makeup claim to have a certain SPF, it is safest to double layer if you are going to be outside for an extended period of time, because the thin layer of foundation often isn’t enough to fully protect you. If you are still worried about keeping a golden glow, self-tanning wipes can be a great way to get the tan without the damage of UV rays or the risk of messy streaks from lotions or spray tans.

With added layers of sunscreen and sweat from the summer heat, your face can often suffer from breakouts and extra oil, so the summer is a great time to take a break from the makeup and to let your skin breathe. It also takes away the stress of mascara streaming down your face once you jump in the pool or the ocean! Additionally – and this is a tip for all seasons – always wash your face before you go to bed. A gentle cleanser and some makeup remover can keep unwanted dirt and oil from clogging your pores at night and bringing you unsightly breakouts and oil in the morning.

In addition to skin, hair can be an absolute nightmare in the summer, especially if you have fine, thin hair like myself. Flat-ironing and curling can ultimately be a lost cause, as your style is gone the minute you walk out of the house. For this reason, going natural for the summer can be great for your hair as well as your face. Giving it a break from the heated tools and applying a nourishing and relaxing serum can not only keep the frizz down, but also help to repair split ends. Try to embrace your natural style. If it tends to be a little wavy, try a scrunching gel when wet to control frizz and give it a little life. You can also get creative with buns, braids, and ponytails to keep the hair out of your face and under control on the truly scorching days. While not necessarily the first place you would think to protect, it is also important to protect your hair and scalp from the sun. Applying sunscreen to your scalp can keep it from being burnt, while the best way to protect your hair from being bleached by the sun is often a hat. With the variety of styles currently out there, from floppy sunhats to fedoras to snapbacks, your dad’s old baseball cap is no longer your only option.

This summer, don’t be bummed by the melting of your makeup and curling of your normally pin-straight hair. Instead, embrace your natural beauty and style and have your most relaxed summer yet!
