Electronica sanctity in Chvrches’ new album

Electronica sanctity in Chvrches’ new album

When you listen to “The Mother We Share”, the opening song in Chvrches’ newly released album The Bones of What You Believe, there’s nothing else but the feeling of ‘Wow, I’m hooked’.

The electronica group from all the way in Glasglow, Scotland has made an intriguing and well composed debut. They carry with them a synth driven, high energy sound popular of the electronica bands of today. Achieving a spot in BBC’s Sound of 2013 for most promising artist thanks to their Recover EP, Chvrches has continued to expound with their new album, The Bones of What You Believe, which arrived in September of 2013.

The entire album is a collection of heart-revving, vibrant, and at times somber music that incorporates synth choruses and lead singer Lauren Mayberry’s vocals to grab a hold of their audience and keep them listening.

Songs such as “Lies” and “We Sink” exemplify what the band is all about; a synth blasting, bass propelled style of dance music that the youth today can’t get enough of. The two most distinct aspects of the band are Mayberry’s tranquil voice and the backgrounds, made up of drums, synth and bass. The lyrics are relaxed and are presented to the listeners with care, not forced down their ears, despite the energy of the song. These two things work together to create a balance that is never overpowering.

Juxtaposing the adrenaline-rich tracks are songs like “You Caught The Light” that has slow, reverb guitar leads that support Martin Doherty’s vocals, or “Tether” that graces the emotion of heartbreak and brings out characteristics of artists like Lana Del Ray.

I would give Chvrches a conclusive 9 out of 10 on The Bones of What You Believe. Their energy radiates from their sound and is infectious to the listener, and not to mention Mayberry plays the role as an enticing lead vocalist. Although like most bands in their debut album, not every song is at a superior level. However, there is not a single deficient song on the album, leading me to believe that Chvrches will go far in their endeavors as a new electronica group.
