56th Grammy awards honor fresh and familiar faces

On Sunday, January 26th, the 56th annual Grammy Awards were held inLos Angeles,California. The exciting night of music included performances by Katy Perry, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Lorde, Beyonce, Daft Punk, and more. Many of the most popular music categories are listed below along with their nominees and winners.

The winner of the album of the year was Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories over the nominees of the albums by Sara Bareilles, Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, and Taylor Swift.

The captivating and distinctive group Daft Punk also took the Record of the Year with their extremely catchy hit “Get Lucky.” This song won over the other exceptionally popular song nominations such as “Radioactive,”  “Royals,” “Locked Out Of Heaven,” and of course, “Blurred Lines.” “Get Lucky” was also voted Best Pop Duo Performance.

The Best New Artist was voted Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Their hits like “Thriftshop” and “Same Love” from their popular album The Heist reached the eleventh spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and is played consistently on radio stations like 102.1 and 104.5.

Song of the Year was voted the unique sounding song “Royals” by the relatively new artist Lorde. Bruno Mars’ “Locked Out Of Heaven,” Pink & Nate Ruess’ “Just Give Me A Reason,” Katy Perry’s “Roar,” and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “Same Love” were also in the running for this music award. “Royals” also won the award for best pop solo performance.

Led Zeppelin – Celebration Day for Best Rock Album

Vampire Weekend – Modern Vampires of the City for Best Alternative Music Album

Alicia Keys – Girl on Fire for Best R&B Album

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – “Thrift Shop” for Best Rap Song/Performance

Kacey Musgraves – Merry Go ‘Round for Best Country Album
