How to register for the SAT

Every year millions of high school students take an AP Exam, SAT, ACT, or PSAT. These exams are often times apart of college applications and can help a student get into college. However, registering for these exams is no easy task. The application process can take up to 40 minutes and requires the full attention of the applicant.

The first step is either signing up for or signing into a College Board Account. This website is where students can register for exams and then access the results, other features include a scholarship search and college planning help. If a student needs to sign up for an account, there is a link to sign up directly under the sign in box. When signing up for an account the website asks questions like who you are, where do you go to school, and parental information. Once this is all filled out, the account is created.

Then, after a student signs into their account, they are taken to their homepage where they can access all the features of the website. To register for the SAT, scroll about half way through the page where there are rows of boxes that say SAT, AP, ACCESS, and ACCUPLACER. Click on the SAT box and the website will redirect to a page dedicated to the SAT. In the middle of the screen will be a yellow box saying “Register Now”, click on that box.

Next, the College Board will ask for a reentry of your account password for safety reasons. Once reentered, another page will appear with a “Register Now” box and by clicking on it, finally, the form to register for the SAT comes up. There are 5 stages of the form; personal information, create student profile, select test and center, upload photo, and check out which all have branch categories underneath them.

Throughout the registration process make sure to have or that you know the following information:

  • Personal Information (name, high school, nationality, parental information, and religious affiliation)
  • What classes you have taken and their rank level
  • What classes you plan on taking and in what level
  • What clubs, activities, sports that you, the applicant, has participated in
  • What degree you would like to complete
  • What majors you are interested in
  • What college type you are interested in (size, private or public, location, and housing)
  • Which test date you would like to test on and where you would like to test
  • If you would like to take the SAT essay or receive the Student Answer Services
  • If you have test accommodations through the College Board or a fee waiver
  • A acceptable photo of yourself for identification at testing time

If you are undecided on certain aspects, like where you want to go to college, your majors, or the size of the college, there is an undecided option. Then, the test dates you can still register for (as of October 15th) are as following; November 3rd (for a late fee), December 1st, March 9th, May 4th, and June 1st. The SAT essay is an additional fee option. Some colleges require or recommend an essay through the SAT on application and you can select to take the essay portion during this registration.

Alongside the SAT essay, you can also select to receive the Student Answer Services. The Student Answer Services provides an in-depth analysis of which questions you got wrong or right after the test scores are in. Also if you opt to take the essay, you will get a copy of the essay through the Student Answer Services. The goal of this service is to help students understand which questions they need to focus on if they plan to take the SAT again.

Testing Accommodations are for students with disabilities who plan on taking the SAT. To receive these accommodations you must register through College Board and be approved. Next, the fee waiver is for students who may not be able to afford the SAT. If you believe that you qualify for a fee waiver then talk to your counselor for more information.

The next page, Choose Your Test Center, is where you will take your test. The school you attend may not offer the SAT on the day that you want to take it, so you might have to take it at another school. Following, students have to submit a photo of themselves for identification purposes. On this page are examples of acceptable and unacceptable photos. Once an acceptable photo has been submitted, the final page is checkout. The price depends on what exactly each student has opted to take or not to take. Finally, after checkout registration for the SAT is complete.
