Editorial: President Trump and his complex relationship with celebrities

From burning limousines to a worldwide protest, President Trump’s inauguration was met with no shortage of disputes and conflicts. Trump’s rhetoric and policies have been problematic with the minorities and the LGBTQ+ group. In his defense, he claims that he has a “great relationship with the blacks,” but his past actions may say otherwise. Since the day of his inauguration many celebrities, specifically, have voiced conflict with Trump’s actions.

Kanye West, an A list celebrity, “supposedly” good friends with Trump, was not invited to perform for Trump’s inauguration. Trump’s committee described Kanye as a person who is not “traditionally American” for an inauguration. Although, he was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Trump’s committee claims Kanye did not seem “fit” for the inauguration.

Lady Gaga, an A list music artist, also had some conflicts with Trump. On election day, Lady Gaga staged a protest right in front of Trump Tower on a sanitation truck. Her sign read “Love Trumps Hate.” Lady Gaga also shared a message via twitter. “In a room full of hope, we will be heard,” the Grammy winner wrote. Also seen in the Women’s March in Washington protesting against Trump, Lady Gaga joined in on the protest and fought for women’s rights. It is also in question whether Lady Gaga will vocalize her opinions during this Sunday’s Super Bowl during her performance.

Trump’s inaugural committee had trouble booking A-list talent to perform. Artists like Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars, and Elton John turned down the opportunity to perform for Trump’s Inauguration. Other celebrities like Katy Perry, Scarlett Johansson, Amy Schumer, and Uzo Aduba did not attend the inauguration, but also joined the protest against Trump’s presidency.

In relation to Trump’s order over immigration, hip-hop artist Rihanna shared via Twitter:

“Disgusted! The news is devastating! America is being ruined right before our eyes! What an immoral pig you have to be to implement such BS!!” After her Trump bash, she sparked a very heated disagreement with Azealia Banks a hip-hop and R&B singer. Rihanna who is an immigrant to the United States, may suffer or can relate to the immigrants who have been banned from the United States.

Possibly more so than ever before, celebrities are using their platforms in front of the pubic to voice their concerns and ideas.
