Back to the “Basics”

Welcome back fall… can’t wait to throw on my uggs and drink my pumpkin spice lattes with you! Surprise! I’m not the only one…

The new tagline going around is, the “basic girl”. The basic girl is the stereotype of all females who enjoy the cliche fall fashion and social normality that everyone else claims to do as well. Inspired by vines and viral facebook videos of people imitating girls who enjoy sipping Starbucks and wearing uggs, the basic girl is the new thing to be this fall.

According to an informational article from Buzzfeed, these are the rules needed to be a complete Basic girl:

1. Get on that pumpkin spice latte kick (exclusively Starbucks)
2. Flaunt your lower body with those skin tight leggings
3. Carry around the newest iPhone (in only the cutest Victoria Secret’s Pink case)
4. Crunch dead leaves while wearing ugg boots
5. Wear a Flannel to stay warm
6. Abuse the hashtag
7. Throw a pile of leaves in the air for Instagram
8. Make sure that whoever enters your house, knows its fall
9. Wear an infinity scarf
10. And nevertheless, take an unnecessarily overwhelming amount of selfies while encountering all of these key points.

Although many girls want to be the new trend, some don’t, and in fact might find being categorized like this to be annoying, and offensive.

Fifteen year old “basic girl”  Allison Kister describes her style as “ comfortable and stylish! Since when is being basic a bad thing?” She added, “being categorized as a basic girl is annoying. I wear these things because they’re comfortable, not because I’m [basic]. I drink Starbucks because it tastes good, not because I’m [basic].”
