LANSDALE – After years of planning and anticipation, the Lansdale YMCA is expanding its building to bring even more opportunities for local members and fitness enthusiasts.

Construction has been underway at the YMCA since early June for a large expansion that includes a brand new high school sized basketball court. This expansion project has been in the works since 2014 but it got pushed aside due to the construction of the North Penn Commons, which are connected to the Lansdale YMCA. Recently, they were able to acquire funding from the state as a grant and begin building.

This new space will be a huge upgrade from the previous court they used, which was an elementary-sized court.

“We’re gonna have a much bigger activity space which will offer, of course, a full-sized basketball court, 2 volleyball courts, and 3 pickleball courts,” executive director Bob Varga explained.

This addition to the building, which is expected to be finished around early March of 2026, will feature two floors each with plenty of different functions. The lower level will be for activities like basketball, volleyball, pickleball, which Varga mentioned.

“The 2nd level, the mezzanine level, is going to feature functional fitness training and some additional cardio equipment that will overlook the basketball court,” Varga said.

Varga and the rest of the Lansdale YMCA staff are very excited and looking forward to the expected turnout from the community when this project is finished. With Penndale and other schools nearby, they are hoping for this new activity space to be a hotspot for kids in Lansdale.

“We are excited for, and expect, the facility to fill up some more with students that are nearby. We expect the courts to be a lot fuller with activities and games, and we plan on doing a lot more sports programming with that space,” Varga clarified.

Members of the local YMCA have expressed their excitement in this project. They’re thrilled about the opening of this new court and space.

“I am very excited for this upgrade to the old YMCA courts. I think it’s so important to allow a bigger area for more connections and more community activities,” YMCA member and North Penn student Keegan Carmody said excitedly.

The old elementary sized court will still be there and used as overflow space for foundational lessons and events. Some activities and events that will proceed in the old space will be children’s gymnastics classes, extra basketball training, soccer training and plenty of other offerings for the community.

“I think all the people in the community have to come see it and experience the excitement for themselves [when the expansion is finished]. We’ve done a lot of planning and work, and we have gone through plenty of different variations of design to make sure it is all done right.” Varga explained.

The new expansion will bring a breath of fresh air to the Lansdale YMCA, creating more space for the community to connect, play, and grow together.
