When the tracklist of an album is revealed, the first thing my eyes scan for is a set of parentheses including a featuring artist. The thrill of an unlikely collaboration is like no other. On another hand, we also see artists covering iconic songs; though some should be left to the original singer. So, below will be my top 10 covers and collaborations in no particular order!
Dial Drunk – Noah Kahan ft Post Malone
I think this song threw me for a loop. I wasn’t sure I would like it, but it surprised me by being one of the best collaborations I’ve ever heard. This song was the creator of “Folk Malone” and rightfully so. I think Post Malone really pulled off mixing his usual rap/pop with indie folk.
I Don’t Wanna Live Forever – ZAYN and Taylor Swift
Regardless of whether you love or hate Taylor Swift, it’s undoubtedly that Zayn and Taylor create perfect harmony between their voices.
So Far Gone – Role Model ft. Lizzy McAlpine
As Lizzy McAlpine is my favorite artist, it was only natural I added in one of her collabs. And with Role Model being on the rise after his song, Sally When The Wine Runs Out, I felt this was the perfect song to add in. The song is arguably so good, and their voices complement each other like peanut butter and jelly.
Girl, so confusing – Charli xcx ft. Lorde
I feel as if this one might be the best collaboration yet. This song perfectly encapsulated exactly what the title is, how ‘it’s so confusing sometimes to be a girl.’ Especially since the music industry has mixed up the two icons. I think they truly ‘work[ed] this out on the remix” and sent fans into a craze.
Telephone – Lady Gaga ft. Beyoncé
Need I say enough? Mothers of our music industry on different ends of the spectrum came together to create, dare I say, a masterpiece. A song that flooded the radio, I still remember being a young girl in my mom’s minivan screaming this song. I think this song SHOULD go down in history as it forever will come back, as Telephone featured in Just Dance 2020.
Homemade Dynamite – Lorde ft. SZA, Post Malone, Khalid
Probably a little underground to the entirety of the music industry, this song featured possibly the most unlikely collaboration. Never would I think that Lorde would ever be in the same song as Post Malone, and similarly to SZA and Post Malone. I think this song is super fun and should be given a listen for sure!
Valerie – Mark Ronson ft. Amy Winehouse + honorable Glee mention!
This one has to be the most agreeable. The late Amy Winehouse is still given so much credit — and rightfully so — for this amazing song. I think it’s also important to note the Glee cover of this song, as I believe it was their best cover.
Do I Wanna Know? – Covered by Hozier
I don’t think anyone will argue that this is one of the best covers to exist. A Tik Tok viral sensation, this song has made its way across different platforms. I think Hozier has one of the voices that anything he sings can touch hearts even if you don’t inherently like his music.
Anything covered by Kelly Clarkson
It’s known that the second Kelly Clarkson get’s her hands on your song, it will be forever changed. She will make that song her own — not even on purpose — and you won’t even be mad about it. Her voice is near perfection and can make any song and every cover send a full body chill over you.
Girl Crush – covered by Harry Styles
I know many people will disagree with my opinion on this. Maybe it’s because you don’t like Harry Styles or maybe because you simply don’t like the song. And that’s ok. But, I believe that Harry can cover almost anything. This version of Girl Crush is so addicting and almost even gives a new meaning to the song. Another honorable mention I’d like to add is his cover of Big Yellow Taxi originally sung by Joni Mitchell.
