Collection of “BeReals”

You’re walking down the street when you feel a buzz from your phone. You grab it from your back pocket to find a Time Sensitive notification. The heading reads “⚠️ Time to BeReal. ⚠️” You stop in your tracks, swipe on the notification, and snap a picture. Post!

BeReal is a new interactive app that has been gaining immense popularity all over the world. However, unlike most other social media platforms, there’s a bit of a unique twist with this one.

Essentially, BeReal simultaneously sends everyone one notification per day. This notification can come at any point of the day, whether it’s 9:00 in the morning or 11:59pm. Nevertheless, when this alert appears on your screen, you have 2 minutes to snap a picture of you and whatever you are doing at that current moment. You can retake this picture as many times as you’d like, but it has to be posted within that 2 minute window.

You and your friends can all view each other’s BeReals, as well as send reaction photos to one another. When the new notification is sent the next day, yesterday’s BeReal is erased from the feed and saved to your archives.

This refreshing concept introduced by BeReal is straying away from the typical social media experience. Whereas you’re likely to find many carefully curated posts swiping through an app like Instagram, BeReal brings an authentic take on life. There’s no option for filters or photoshop, nor any worries about how many likes you’re receiving.

Not only does this app serve as a way to connect with your friends, but it is a step in the right direction to restore the idea that your life doesn’t have to be perfect. BeReal focuses on the mundane, everyday activities of life and makes sharing them beautiful. So while Instagram posts and Snapchat stories serve as highlight reels of your life, BeReal serves as a daily journal.

Of course, there’s always exceptions to the rule; some users won’t take their BeReals on time, not clicking on the notification until they’re out doing something more interesting. Many BeRealers are suggesting a 2-hour time limit to eliminate this issue and ensure that the concept of the app can still remain intact.

Let’s change social media history, one BeReal at a time.
