Mamma Mia! Takes the Stage at North Penn this Spring

TOWAMENCIN– If you can dance, if you can jive and are ready for the time of your life, the North Penn High School Auditorium is the place for you this spring as Mamma Mia! takes the stage. Performances will be held on May 2nd, 3rd and 4th at 7:30 pm and May 5th at 2:00 pm with a special Gold Card Matinee show on May 1st at 1:00 pm.

NPHS Theatre and Thespian Troupe 5464 invite the community to join them in celebrating the legendary music, style and energy of Mamma Mia! this spring. While the show has its own captivating story, the music is pure ABBA, the famed Swedish pop group known for creating some of the most popular songs of all time. Beloved since the 1970s, ABBA’s timeless music has been introduced to a whole new generation through the mega-hit Broadway musical that ran for 14 years as well as the movies Mamma Mia! and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

Students from grades 10, 11 and 12 have been working tirelessly behind the scenes since January to bring to life the iconic characters of Donna and the Dynamos, Sophie, Sky, and a whole host of Greek islanders and wedding attendees. Although the show is set in 1999, the NPHS student costume crew is hard at work emulating ‘70s styles to recreate the authentic Dynamos fashions. While cast members and pit band rehearse joyous music and orchestrations, the student stage crew members are building the romantic Greek island Taverna, hanging lights and balancing mics.

On a picturesque Greek island, Sophie Sheridan (Sammi Stec, senior) dreams of her upcoming “perfect white wedding” to Sky (Jeremy DerMovsesian, sophomore), which she hopes will include her father walking her down the aisle. The problem with Sophie’s fantasy? She has no idea who her dad is. Sophia’s mother Donna (Molly Hofstaedter, senior) refuses to tell Sophie about her past, forcing Sophie to take matters into her own hands. While Donna is busy preparing for the wedding, Sophie and her two best friends, Lisa (Karly Buchanan, junior) and Ali (Alison Coles, sophomore), read Donna’s diary and discover that there are three men who could be Sophie’s father: Bill (Joshua Maier, senior), Sam (Paul Klemmer, senior) and Harry (Chris Lee, junior). Convinced that she will know who her father is as soon as she meets him, Sophie sends wedding invitations to all three men. As expected, things become much more complicated once the three men arrive. Shortly after Donna’s best friends (and former Dynamo band mates) Tanya (Maddy Burk, senior) and Rosie (Gabrielle Moseley, junior) reach the island, Donna discovers the unexpected wedding guests. Overcome with mixed emotions, Donna launches into the musical’s title number as she confronts her three former boyfriends. Despite a number of conflicts that reopen old relationship wounds, this heartwarming musical will have audiences wiping away tears of joy until the final wedding bells chime. Complete with a show stopping Dynamos reunion performance, Mamma Mia! will have audiences dancing in the aisles to tunes like “Dancing Queen,” “Super Trooper,” “Take a Chance on Me,” and “Waterloo.”

NPHS Theatre and Thespian Troupe 5664 invite the community to join them for this uplifting jukebox musical as it guarantees a night of Dynamos, dads, dancing and platform shoes! Mamma Mia! is family friendly for ages 10 and above.
