TOWAMENCIN – He is 6’9” and North Penn’s newest addition to the security team, his name is Charles Kornegay, and he loves his new workplace.

“North Penn has been very nice since I’ve been here; there are some very nice people.”

Since arriving Korneagy has liked the diversity and the dissimilarities of the student body; he has very good people skills and has great experience with working with kids and knows he will enjoy his time at North Penn.

“A lot of different kinds of people, with a good atmosphere, and a good sense of school spirit; I like it,” commented Kornegay.

Charles Kornegay has not always been confined to one area though; he was once a professional basketball player in Europe. Playing in different countries and continents like Turkey, Spain, Moscow, Argentina, and even in the Australian basketball league.

He grew up loving the game, practicing it and playing it whenever he could and improving his skills.

“I started at the age of 7, and grew up knowing I was going to play on the big stage, somehow.”

Most professional athletes say that their biggest influence to their game would be the superstar players they see on the television, but not Charles. He said the most positive influence on his love for the game came from his dad.

“I didn’t grow up watching the game, but my dad taught me how to play and was a positive figure to me.”

Kornegay’s first taste of basketball spotlight came in college when he played for the Villanova Wildcats. While playing for Villanova’s basketball team, Kornegay also studied Liberal Arts. During his time there his team won the Big East Tournament and made it to the NCAA tournament three times.

“The whole basketball experience was amazing and playing in front of all the fans was great.”

After college Kornegay hired an agent in the hopes of playing the game he loved professionally. Soon enough Kornegay was getting offers from all around the world to play for their teams. He embarked on his 12 year career of basketball traveling the world seeing new places and playing the game he loved. His biggest highlight of his professional career he said was when he joined Spain’s National team placing 3rd in the FIBA tournament.

After his career ended Kornegay continued his love of basketball by teaching it to kids. He is now the assistant coach at Harcum College and is helping out with the North Penn basketball team.

“I was invited to come help out by Coach Conrad, and I said I would help out his young men whenever and however I could.”

Now done with his basketball career,Kornegay looks forward to his new profession at North Penn and being a part of his new team of security guards.
