Junior English Students Celebrate the World of Prose At 1st Lit Fest

Junior+English+Students+Celebrate+the+World+of+Prose+At+1st+Lit+Fest

It’s not every day that you find high school students as excited about literature as they are about twitter, but here at NPHS, you will find it. The words of C.S. Lewis appropriately describe literature’s position in the incredible English curriculum in our school and overall district.

“Literature adds to reality, it does not simple describe it. It enriches the necessary competencies that daily life requires and provides; and in this respect, it irrigates the deserts that our lives have already become.” – C.S. Lewis

Literary sense came alive in the North Penn Auditorium Thursday afternoon, as junior Honors English students celebrated and appreciated the works of classic literary masterminds including Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Shakespeare, and many others. The first annual Lit Fest was a spectacular success, unquestionably demonstrating North Penn’s dedication and love of the arts and literature.

Starting off the fest on a theatrical note, students and 11th grade English teachers participated in a dramatic reading contest, reciting famous monologues and dialogues from classic pieces of literature. Mrs. Ellen Mckee read a passage from Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mrs. Megan Schmit recited a section of Thoreau’s Walden, and Mrs. Elizabeth Weizer read from a work by Ernest Hemingway.

Mr. Kenneth Kratz’s presentation received a standing ovation from his dedicated student section, along with Mr. Kevin Manero’s theatrical recital of an excerpt from chapter twenty four of The Scarlett Letter.

Twelve enthusiastic juniors participated in the contest, which included passages from Les Miserables, Moby-Dick, Romeo and Juliet, and The Scarlet Letter. All the performances were passionate and wholehearted, but ultimately Chris Connell was awarded third place for his recital from Moby-Dick and team Chelsea Aubert and Ryan Aragona won second place for their performance of Dimmesdale and Hester from The Scarlet Letter.

Robin Pinkos championed the contest, earning first place for her memorized rendition of Ahab’s eccentric monologue from Herman Mellvile’s Moby-Dick.

Students were also able to participate in a creative poster/ book cover design contest. Tori Mitchell was awarded 2nd place and Jane Lee was awarded 1st place. Victoria Christensen won 1st place for her submitted piece in the artistic rendering category.

The first ever Knowledge Bowl followed the reading contest. Each English teacher’s various classes participated as a team in a contest which consisted of various knowledge based questions regarding author’s purpose, theme, characterization, and vocabulary. The questions were designed in either SAT style, AP format, or final exam format, which gave all students a little taste of the tests that are to come for them.

Three students from each class contended on questions such as “which quote from Moby-Dick addresses the theme of fate and free will?”

Although it was an extremely close competition, in the end, only one team may reign. Excitement rang throughout the auditorium as Manero announced the winners: Mr. Kratz’s 8th period and Mr. Manero’s periods 1 and 5 won third place. Mrs. Schimidt’s period 2, Mr. Kratz’s period 3, and Mr. Manero’s 6th period earned second place.

Cheers and applause exploded as Mrs. Weizer’s 4th period class were named the first places winners of the first annual Knowledge Bowl.

“I thought it was really fun and winning was amazing because it shows how much our class learned in English so far. Also, it was a good review!” said 11th grade student Madison Block, a student in Mrs. Weizer’s winning 4th period class.

“I feel like we learned a lot this year and we got to prove it.”
