Japanese Lanaguage Students Receive Honors

LANSDALE – Congratulations to the North Penn High School students who received high honors in the MCATFL James J. Doyle Annual Oral Proficiency Contest for the Japanese language. This annual contest provides a forum for students to showcase their speaking skills in a foreign language and meet students from other schools in the county. Individual interviews are conducted by foreign language professionals with each student participant.

The contest is open to students from MCATFL member schools who take French, Spanish, German or Japanese courses. Students must have learned their foreign language in a classroom in the United States. Students who speak the language as their primary tongue at home or who have spent more than six consecutive weeks in a country where the language is spoken are not eligible to compete. In each of the four languages, levels 01, 1, 2, 3 and Advanced (AP) are tested.

The contest took place on February 28th at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School with the following seven North Penn students walking away with either a gold or silver medal in the various levels of Japanese:

Japanese Level 01         Gold – Howard Chu                         Silver – Konstantina Merianos

Japanese Level 1           Gold – Brandon McDonnell             Silver – Jillian Zhong

Japanese Level 2           Gold – Yejin (Stephanie) Hong

Japanese Level 3           Gold – Jennie Ju

Advanced (AP)               Silver – Kang Lee

For more information on this contest, please contact NPHS Japanese teacher Nori Coyle at [email protected] or visit the MCATFL website at www.mcatfl.org.
