Volleyball puts spike on 2020 season by honoring seniors

TOWAMENCIN- After being in limbo for much of the offseason, the North Penn Knights girl’s Volleyball team are thankful to be able to play. The schedule was not finalized until a couple of weeks ago, and this was also when they found out they would be facing rivals Souderton on Senior Knight.

The Knights fell to Souderton in three sets, (15-25),(23-25),(20-25). It was a close contest for much of the match, as both teams had tough plays and showed astute athleticism. This was an emotional night for the seniors of the squad, as they are playing a shortened season due to COVID.

The Knights did not start off so well, as Souderton played a great first set and North Penn just could not keep up. There were impressive plays on the Knights’ side, but Souderton was too good. After a timeout called by the Knights down 6-15, there was almost a comeback, but it would prove to fall short after a valiant effort and late surge by Souderton.

“It was an emotional night for our seniors, and they make up about half of our squad as well. We just weren’t playing our best volleyball tonight, we played this team a couple weeks ago and were able to beat them,” Head coach Scott Coles said.

The second set was a different story. It was down to the wire, very competitive throughout, and again showed tough plays by both sides. The serve was effective for North Penn, as this is how they got most of their points. They were able to couple this with strong plays at the net, deceiving Souderton on a couple plays. This set went right down to the 20’s, as North Penn just fell short after a timeout by Souderton tied at 22 all. Three straight great plays by Souderton ended the set, but the second set was still great by North Penn.

The third set was more of the same from both teams, being close right down to the wire. Again North Penn got a majority of their points off of the serve, as it seemed to be on tonight for them. However, Souderton was able to make some great plays, keeping the ball in play and making something out of nothing. North Penn would not be outdone, as they would keep on par with the great plays and make some of their own as well. It was close until the end, when Souderton was able to go on a bit of a streak and close out the match in straight sets.

“It was an emotional night for our seniors, and they make up about half of our squad as well. We just weren’t playing our best volleyball tonight, we played this team a couple weeks ago and were able to beat them,” Head coach Scott said.

Following the match, the seniors were recognized by their coaches and family in the Senior Knight festivities.
