NP to host Lax for Leukemia night

TOWAMENCIN – On Wednesday May 10th The North Penn Lady Knights will not only face Central Bucks East in a conference lacrosse game, but will also be raising awareness in the annual Lax for Leukemia. Lax for Leukemia is a fundraising night benefitting the Alyssa Marie Oxenford Memorial Athletic Scholarship and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS).

Starting at 5:00 the JV team will play. Chick Fil A sandwiches, hot dogs, soft pretzels, Rita’s, baked goods, candy, t-shirts, and bracelets will be sold throughout the night. Free Philly Soft Pretzel are being offered the first 50 students that show up.

At 6:30 there will be a dedication to former lacrosse player Alyssa Oxenford. Oxenford graduated from North Penn in 2011, but was diagnosed with Leukemia May 2014 just after her Junior year at East Stroudsburg University studying to become a Health and PhysEd teacher.

Oxenford’s dream was to teach and coach lacrosse in the North Penn School District, but in August 2015 Alyssa lost her hard fought battle with Leukemia. Coaches Heather Mellow and Chris Young created this event and each year this night is dedicated in Alyssa’s honor. This event will be significant for lacrosse players, junior Jillian Barr and sophomore Heather Shannon, because they were both cousins with Oxenford.

“It means a lot to me because we were so close. Also it is great for all my teammates, friends and coaches to come together for a cause that is so important to me and my family,” said Barr.
