TOWAMENCIN – The North Penn girls Track and Field team sported their pink yesterday as the celebrated their senior night in a meet against Souderton. Clad in T-shirts straying from their traditional colors, the girls came together in support of a parent of athlete Erin LeConey.

“I told the team that my mom had breast cancer and then it was the captains’ idea to have the pink out for our meet. It really meant a lot to me,” stated LeConey.

Seated up in the bleachers was Cathy LeConey, the inspiration for the themed meet. As a spectator, she was flattered by the teams support.

“It’s just awesome. Seeing all the girls have each other’s backs is great and I love seeing how talented they all are on and off the track,” remarked Cathy LeConey “Honestly, watching all the pink on the field really brought a smile to my face.”

Helping to organize this feat was junior Lauren Follis. To set their senior night apart from previous years, the team chose to not only celebrate their seniors but also turn everyone’s attention towards a worthy cause.

“We really wanted to do something special as a team since we have 10 seniors this year. With the pink shirts, we wanted to raise awareness for Breast Cancer and all the money we are making is going towards that as well,” stated Follis.

Aside from celebrating their seniors and raising awareness for Breast Cancer, the girls had a strong showing in the meet. Winning every single relay and sweeping high jump and 300 hurdles in their meet against the Indians, the girls improved their standings to 6-0. Undefeated in their 5-0 Suburban One Continental League record, the Girls Track and Field team is sprinting ahead towards Leagues. Captain Morgan Brett foresees future success for the entire team.

“Overall I think we’re doing very well this year. We’ve won every single league meet that we’ve had and it really puts us at an advantage now going into leagues. Every girl on the team is performing and improving as the season continues and it’s great to see that as a captain. I’m excited for States; I think that’s when we’re going to really peak and win,” exclaimed Brett.

Whether a team is finding success or failure, a strong team of leaders is essential to keeping everyone working together. Led by seniors Morgan Brett, Phoebe Clowser, Morgan Kull, and Ally Sharkey and Junior Uche Nwogwugwu, the team has a plentitude of resources.

“As a whole, all of our captains are good leaders and follow through when they say they’re going to do something,” stated Captain Phoebe Clowser “It’s great that the girls all respect us and really listen when we try to help them fix something. We all work together with each other and the coaches and it really is one big unit.”

Distance Coach Jewel Rama is extremely optimistic regarding the rest of the spring season. As a coach, he sees the passion throughout the entire team to keep pushing forward.

“I feel very good about the team. When you have a group of girls, who have been working as hard as they have since the beginning, they are bound to be successful. They have a “No Mercy” motto which I absolutely love since they have unfinished business from the Winter Season that is definitely translating into their current efforts,” remarked Rama.

With Leagues approaching on May 13th and 14th, the team has a little less than two weeks until they meet their Conference Rivals. Looking even further, Rama already predicts a win at States.

“I see a championship and we aren’t afraid to say it. We’re going to give Cheltenham a run for their money and we’re not scared to talk about it.”

As a former North Penn student, Rama has been on both sides as a former runner and now coach. To him, the experience is completely worthwhile and he is thankful for the opportunity.

“It’s a lot more rewarding because it means more to me personally. I feel almost that their success is my success, being that I’ve been in their shoes before so makes it that much more fulfilling seeing it from a coach’s standpoint.”

The Girls Track and Field team is set to meet up against the Titans at Central Bucks South on Tuesday May 10th at 3:30 for their last dual meet.
