TOWAMENCIN – The North Penn Lady Knights basketball team stood tall in their Tuesday night matchup against Downingtown West, securing a dominant win with a final score of 48-16. Junior Sam Carangi and sophomore Bri Hewlett were among last night’s leading scorers, scoring 13 and 10 points respectively.

Offensively, the Lady Knights were outstanding. Carangi illuminated the scoreboard with a three-pointer to start off the game. She then executed a beautiful backhand lay-up and drove past her defensive man to the basket for another four points. Hewlett also contributed a three-pointer and Carangi finished the first quarter with a steal and lay-up, making the score 15-5.

The second and third quarters were the pinnacles for the Lady Knights. Sophomore Mia Melchior made a breakthrough with her pair of three-pointers (one in each quarter) along with senior Mikaela Giuliani who successfully hit a jumper and a three-pointer. Hewlett made another three and pushed her way to the basket twice, scoring a majority of her 10 points between these two quarters. Steals were made by junior Irisa Ye and Carangi, forcing turnovers and securing more points. Sophomore Jess Mckenzie scored while Melchior closed the third quarter with her second three-pointer, making the score 45-12.

Allowing only one point between the second and third quarters, the Lady Knights showed their defensive dominance through forcing turnovers, draining threes, and boxing out their opponents. Alhough, they slowed down their offensive run in the fourth with Giuliani making a two and a foul shot.

“I think we all played really well. With only seven on the team, we all came out and I think everyone contributed,” commented center, Mikaela Giuliani. “Keeping a team to 16 points is really hard to do and I think that’s great because our defense was our focus on tonight’s game and I think we executed the game well.”

It is clear through their defense that the Lady Knights had their opponents well trained. Following last Friday night’s loss to Perkiomen Valley, the girls made sure that their defense was on par for last night’s matchup.

“We’ve done a lot of defensive drills at practice,” said point guard and shooting guard, Sam Carangi. “After the devastating loss on Friday to Perk Valley, we knew we had to step up our defense because we can’t give up 69 points to a team and think that we’re going to win.”

The Lady Knights fell to the Perkiomen Valley Vikings 69-50 last Friday night in their season’s home opener.

“Our goal is to keep all teams under 40 [points],” added Giuliani. “We know that if we can do that we can win a lot of our games. I have really high hopes for this season.”

The girls are back on the court away at CB South this Friday at 7pm.
