Knights Get Back on the Horse

The North Penn Knights bounced back after a disappointing loss to Lasalle to beat Lansdale Catholic 36-6.

Senior quarterback Corey Ernst completed 8 of 13 passes for 100 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Knights look to lean on the passing attack to take advantage of their quarterback’s strength.

“I want to be able to throw the ball a little more with Corey, cause he’s such a good quarterback. As the game dictates that, we’ll do that,” said head coach Dick Beck

Ernst’s performance last week against Lasalle was less than spectacular, giving up crucial turnovers however if Ernst’s more recent performance continues, Beck should have no problem putting more faith in his senior quarterback.

“[The win] was big, you never wanna start 0-2,” said Ernst.

Ernst was successful at spreading the ball to his offensive weapons seniors Dan Gevirtz, Shayne Watson and Ralph Reeves, and sophomore Kris Akins all got the ball tossed their way.

Junior running back Kyle Mayfield got things going with a TD in the first quarter, and racked up a total of 98 yards and 3 TDs.

On the other side of the ball, the Knights defense forced 3 turnovers: an interception by junior Bobby Bull, and fumble recoveries by seniors Ralph Reeves and Matt Smith.

At the half, after a slow start, the Knights led the Crusaders 29-0, well on their way to a shutout until senior LC quarterback Pat Schoenberger ran 11 yards for LC’s only score of the night late in the fourth quarter, followed by a failed extra point.

Gevirtz, who caught 4 balls for 47 yards and a touchdown, led the Knights in receiving and played a solid defensive game at cornerback.

Despite the win, the Knights know there is still a lot of work ahead on both sides of the ball.

“We played pretty good, but we are not playing to our full potential,” said Reeves.

Next Saturday the Knights take on St. Joes Prep and Skyler Mornhinweg, son of Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg.

Skyler has fully committed to Penn State to play for Coach Joe Paterno. The Knights defense will have it’s hands full with such a threat at quarterback.

Coach Beck said after the game that “We got to get better if we want a chance to beat [St. Joes] Prep next week, we got to get better.”

This was such a great game, after a very long and hard week of practice that week, It felt awesome to come out and leave everything on the field, the whole squad truley gave it all they had. Nobody wanted to start out 0-3.
