Editorial: He won the presidency, but not our hearts

Nobody likes a bully, but many Americans seem to favor Donald Trump. As our new president, one should give him the utmost respect for taking the role of running our country. Like the old saying goes, “treat others how you want to be treated”, but frankly, Trump doesn’t treat anyone but himself with respect.

Trump, throughout the whole campaign, has put down so many people, such as Mexicans, members of the LGBTQ community, women, the disabled, and many other minority groups. He has bashed many to get to the top by using fear and hate, and surprisingly, it worked. The land of the free and the home of the brave is going to be represented and ran by a man who wants to punish women for choosing to have an abortion, deport “illegal” immigrants, and have Mexico build a wall. A loss for words is truly an understatement.

How are Americans expected to respect a man who constantly puts others down? This hurtful man has struck fear into so many people, and it’s truly heartbreaking.

I cannot bring myself to have any respect for someone who offends literally millions of people and sees nothing wrong with it. I cannot trust a man who calls sexual harassment “locker room talk” and plays it off as if it’s nothing. I cannot care for a man who has made not only myself, but also my friends, cry in fear of what he might do while in office.

My friends of Muslim background are scared to express their religion in fear of getting killed. My LGBTQ friends are nervous they will no longer be able to get married and have a family when they’re older. My African American friends are petrified of what will happen to them because of the color of their skin. My female friends are scared of losing the right to their own bodies.

The main cause behind this: Donald J. Trump.

All that has been stated so far in this writing is not propaganda, and I’m not writing to persuade my readers that Trump is a bad guy; those are not my intentions. My intentions are to illustrate what he has caused, and because of these reasons, I feel as though he has not earned the respect he thinks he deserves. He is a person just like the rest of the public, and just because he is going to be the next president of the United States, does not mean he automatically gains approval. Respect is earned.

I can only hope that all of what Trump has said he is going to do is just talk. I hope not only for my future, but also the public’s, that Trump makes nothing but the best decisions in office, while still considering everyone other than himself. Maybe then Americans can give him the support he desperately wants.
