From New Hampshire onward, “Outsiders” more and more on the inside

Devin Welsh, Staff Writer

Quick, everybody panic! Trump won something! Unless you’re a Trump supporter, in which case – quick everybody panic, Trump has supporters! Alright, maybe it’s not that serious considering the 2016 presidential race is still only just beginning.

In the New Hampshire Primary that took place last Tuesday, Feb. 9, colorful businessman, both in language and spray tan, Donald Trump claimed first among Republicans, while the youth favorite Bernie Sanders seized the number one spot from Hillary Clinton.

With 35% of the GOP votes, Trump picked up ten delegates to add to his total of seventeen. Surprisingly, Republican outsider and political moderate John Kasich’s focus on New Hampshire rather than Iowa paid off, rewarding him with second place in the Granite State, a total of five delegates, and a bit more relevancy among his flamboyant competition.

Despite his atrocious performance in the latest Republican debate and how that translated to New Hampshire, Marco Rubio still isn’t out of this race. The Florida Senator finished fifth behind Jeb “Joyful Tortoise” Bush with about 10% of the votes but he is still only a single delegate being Texas Sen. Ted Cruz at 10.

Cruz, Bush, and Rubio and each received three delegates while recent race drop-outs Chris Christie and Carly Fiorina didn’t get enough votes to really place. Though former Virginia Gov. Jim Gillmore received an earth-shattering 0% of the votes, he is still holding on to hope.

While they were close in Iowa, Bernie Sanders had a satisfactory voter turnout in the backyard of his home state of Vermont granting him about 60% of the Democratic votes and fifteen delegates. However with a total of thirty-six pledged delegates, he is only just ahead of his competition by four delegates.

Until Hillary Clinton can secure the trust of America and the attention of the youth, the voters are going to be ‘feeling the Bern’ for quite a while. But the race is still young and the voters are still capable of being swayed, so don’t panic if your ideal candidate isn’t crushing the polls or these initial voting sessions.
