Isn’t it ironic who you can find on twitter!? Your friends, family, and sometimes even celebrities. Well what if I said that one of the most influential world leader himself, Pope Francis, is on Twitter…. yes, there is a papal twitter account.

Why would the Pope ever join Twitter? Well, the Pope recognizes that to appeal to today’s generation, especially teenagers, the best way isn’t the television, or newspaper, but to target social media. Since social media is the best and most effective way to get across to teenagers, he’s taken matters into his hands by creating himself a twitter. With 7.2 million followers, his tweets are updating the world on not only religious virtues and concepts, but world news and accomplishments. He explains throughout his tweets, that even if you are not a Catholic, you can still believe in the Pope, and follow him. He has accomplished so many things for the greater good of the world, and plans to continue to do so. Not only does he resolve world problems, but he brings people together, and promotes world peace.
Recently, in his address to a group of bishops and seminarians in Philadelphia, the Pope ironically expressed his feelings about social media. He said, “Social media has made us all lonely.” “Today’s culture seems to encourage people to not bond with anything or anyone,” Francis said. “The most important thing today seems to be to follow the latest trend or activity, even at a religious level. Today consumerism determines what is important.”

He described social media as a bad thing, which draws us away from not only God, but from each other. It plays a role in distancing ourselves from others, who can make us truly happy.
So why does the Pope say this, and then turn around and have a Twitter anyway? Well, he has a twitter because, no matter how lonely we might be, we still continue to use social media. He recognizes that he can’t change that , so instead he decides to join us. He accepts the fact that we must use social media, so he must get his message out one way or another. In this case its through Twitter.

Even if you are not a follower of the Catholic Church, you can be a follower of the Pope. You’re just a click away from updates to help create a better world, and promote world where peace is spread throughout. You can follow the Pope @pontifex.
