Vaping trend to be discussed by nationally certified speaker at upcoming NPSD Parent Forum

LANSDALE – With the growing popularity of “vaping” among teens and young adults, the North Penn School District (NPSD) is hosting Nationally Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist David Fialko to speak to families about this topic on Monday, January 14 at 7:00 pm in the North Penn High School (NPHS) Audion.

David Fialko is an Internationally Certified Prevention Specialist and a Nationally Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist at the Council of Southeast Pennsylvania, Inc. Fialko provides tobacco cessation, education and prevention services throughout the state and abroad. His 16 years of experience working in the Substance Use Disorder and Mental Health field keeps him informed of current trends in Alcohol, Tobacco & Other Drug (ATOD) use.

Fialko’s presentation will include the following topics:

  • The effects of nicotine;

  • What nicotine-based products can cost schools;

  • Reviewing Pennsylvania Youth Survey (PAYS) data highlighting recent increases in self-reported use;

  • Traditional  “tobacco” products and their popularity;

  • Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS), also known as “vapes,” including what they are and how they work;

  • Vaping and transition to tobacco products;

  • The “JUUL” phenomenon;

  • Cross-utilization of ENDS to utilized CBDs (non-THC) and Marijuana (THC) based products; and

  • Available supports for youth and families.
