NPHS students capture awards in AAUW writing contest

LANSDALE – The North Penn School District (NPSD) is proud to recognize 19 North Penn High School (NPHS) students for their performance in the 2018 American Association of University Women (AAUW) Creative Writing Contest earlier this year.

Each year, the organizers of the AAUW Creative Writing Contest review anonymous pieces of both poetry and prose selections submitted by students in grades 10 through 12 attending NPHS, Souderton High School and Germantown Academy High School. More than 200 creative entries were submitted.

Nineteen North Penn students were named winners of the AAUW’s annual creative writing contest, coordinated this year by Janet Kratz, NPHS English Teacher. At an awards ceremony in April held at the NPSD Educational Services Center, these students heard the insights of guest speaker Suzanne Bush, former president and publisher of The Reporter from 1991-to 2001. More recently Ms. Bush has done freelance writing for publications focusing on the equine industry and has also published a young adult novel entitled Time Will Tell. Ms. Bush encouraged students to ask questions about their world and use that curiosity to spur on their writing. Students read their creative entries, poetry or prose, to the audience of parents, teachers, and community members and were given a commemorative journal.
