TOWAMENCIN- North Penn High School’s auditorium was filled with the sound of breathtaking music and the brilliant visuals of bright, twirling flags on Saturday, October 1st. Hosting their annual Knight of Sound, North Penn’s marching band, the Marching Knights, invited thirteen different schools to perform and compete at NPHS.

The schools that went head to head on Saturday include North East Maryland High school, Louis e Dieruff High school, Souderton High School, Council Rock High School, Avon Grove High School, Williamstown High School, Coatesville Area High School, Wilson Area High School, Boyertown Area High School, Rustin High School, Central Bucks High School, and Quakertown High School.

From Beethoven to Imagine Dragons, the shows that were performed varied greatly in theme. Quakertown’s “Tribal Effects”, featuring a number of African-inspired pieces, and Coatesville’s “Space Odyssey”, featuring Richard Strauss’s “Also sprach Zarathustra”, were two of the many shows that were displayed Saturday evening.

A marching band wouldn’t be complete without their elegant dancers: the color guard teams. Unfortunately, since this year’s Knight of Sound was held indoors due to a soggy football field, color guard teams weren’t able to leap and spin as much as they were used to. Many made up for it, however, by putting on amazing renditions that blew away the audience and left them breathless in their seats. With flags spinning in the air and wide smiles on their faces, the color guard teams showcased brilliant performances in the small space that they were provided.

Even though the Marching Knights were unable to compete, they still put on an excellent and astonishing show. Named, “With Love”, their performance followed the story of a Russian couple broken apart by the Russian Revolution. The music performed was awe-inspiring, and the energy from the marching band and color guard team seemed to affect the audience as well. Cheering and a standing ovation followed the end of their beautiful production.

When the event was drawing to a close, the champions were finally announced. The division champions are as follows: Louis e Dieruff High School, Williamstown High School, Council Rock High School, Boyertown High School, Rustin High School, and Quakertown High School. These schools each received an award for their performances. Central Bucks High School and Quakertown High School took home additional prizes for their superb sound and color guard.

Thanks to Avon Grove High School’s fun production, “Hide and Seek,” and Boyertown High School’s animated and lively, “The Summit”, plus many more, this was certainly a night showcasing incredible talent.
