Zolot Wins Over Judges at 3rd Annual Mr. NP

Mr. North Penn, an emerging tradition here at North Penn, was an outstanding event this year. This third year featured an array of thirteen hilariously witty contestants including Alex Acciani, Joe Claffey, Pat Davis, Eric Goldstein, Joe Grundy, Brian Kissig, Ben Kloss, Steve Leonard, Matt McMahon, Anish Patel, Bhavik Patel, T.J. Smink, and Brian Zolot.

The night started out with a dance featuring the judges from our school. Miss Young, Mr. Brett, Miss Assous, Mr. Jones, Miss Higgins, Mr. Young, Mrs. Marino, Mr. Maurer, Miss Carafa and Mr. Christopher gracefully glided across the stage during a performance any student would dream of watching.

Then, the much anticipated opening dance scene with the contestants began. Complete with classic 90’s tunes of New Kids on the Block, Backstreet Boys, and Justin Timberlake, and an impressive back flip, the dance left the audience craving for more. Oh, and let’s not forget….the infamous yoga pants…

A short video played reminding the audience why this whole event is important to the school. This year’s show benefitted The Variety Club- The Children’s Charity, an organization helping and serving children with disabilities. ‘Oh’s’ and ‘awe’s were heard as the audience watched adorable children expressing their love for the exceptional organization.

The teacher judges sat down along with guest student judges Jewel Rama and Rebecca Carrol, thanks to yours truly, the Knight Crier, and the competition officially started. First up was the swimsuit portion which featured Eric Goldstein as a lovely mermaid, and Joe Claffey, jamming out on the saxophone to George Michael with guest star Mr. Hynes in his act. Brian Zolot roller-skated around the auditorium on a pony, styling very risqué daisy duke shorts.

Before the talent portion of the show, the audience viewed a message from last year’s Mr. NP’s winner, Ryan Bonner, who wished good luck to this year’s contestants and performed a little dance number of his own, reminiscent of last year’s talent.

Always a favorite of the evening, the talent portions of the show brought roars of laughter to the auditorium. Alex Accaini’s glow-in-the-dark dubstep shined the stage. Eric Goldstein’s Spongebob ballad impressed the judges. T. J. Sminks’s serenade to a gorilla accompanied by Boy Scouts invited the audience to the jungle. Pat Davis’s glorious and angelic rendition of Adele’s “Someone Like You” deeply moved the audience. Bhavik Patel’s comedy routine and SunDrop dance provided an enjoyable tug at his fellow contestant’s talents.

The Formal Wear and Question/Answer section seemed to fly by after the two previous sections, but the audience thoroughly enjoyed seeing the contestants all dolled up. Alex Accaini escorted by adorable little girl Princess Lexi and Brian Zolot’s puppy received much approval from the audience. Everyone seemed to enjoy the very cute ending to the competition.

The moment everyone was waiting for finally arrived, and the winners were announced. Pat Davis’s extremely entertaining talent and swimwear awarded him second runner up, and Matt McMahon was awarded first runner up.

The crowd roared with excitement as the beloved and energetic Brian Zolot was awarded the esteemed title of Mr. North Penn 2012!

All in all, this year’s event was more of a success than anyone could have hoped.

“It was so great; being able to help decide the winner was great. It was my best experience at North Penn,” says guest judge Rebecca Carrol.

“Being with all the guys was the best part, I was sitting in the crowd last year and never thought I’d be up there now,” says second runner up Pat Davis, who feels great about winning his title.

Joe Claffey said with a delightful grin that his favorite experience was everybody- the people and the atmosphere.

The effort and dedication needed for this great outcome was very much noticed by the audience. Who knew North Penn had so many talented and entertaining students?  The third annual Mr. North Penn Competition likely ensured that the show will go on, as it continues to expand an build in popularity each year.
