Mock Convention: Meet the Campaign Managers: Stephen Harrington for Mitt Romney

Mock+Convention%3A+Meet+the+Campaign+Managers%3A+Stephen+Harrington+for+Mitt+Romney

Campaign Manager: Stephen Harrington

Candidate: Mitt Romney

About the Campaign Manager:

Interests: volunteering, social studies, politics

School involvements: Mock Convention, Mock Trial Team, Goodwill Ambassadors, French Club, National Honor Society

Why did you want to get involved with Mock Convention? It was an opportunity to get involved in both the school’s community and politics, and I may never get the chance to do anything like it again.

What are you most excited about? Campaigning and speaking.

Why are you interested in politics? I may go into politics after high school because I like making a difference.

Why is it important that students understand politics? I believe that every law made anywhere affects everyone, some more directly than others, and I think it’s important for students to understand how they are affected and how they can get involved in the political process.

About the Candidate:

64 years old, son of former Michigan governor, member of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints

Background information: Degree from Harvard Business and Law Schools, started Bain Capital (a highly successful private equity firm), served as Chair of the organizing committee of the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games, served as governor of Massachusetts 2003-2007, New York Times bestselling author.

Major campaign points: economic growth by tax cuts for upper-classes, repeal of Obama healthcare law and spending bill, crackdown on illegal immigration, supports alternative energy efforts, opposes same-sex marriage

Why students should vote for your candidate: He is a man of morals and values. He is relatively young yet has great experience and political credentials, and his economic expertise is exactly what we need in these tough times.

Here’s what I think Mitt Romney should say at the next debate — I know you have a thousand other suggestions. Here’s one more:

Newt (not Speaker Gingrich), I wish that sometimes we could just talk without all the crowds and the cameras. I would want to tell you that this election isn’t about me and it isn’t about you. It’s about the hundreds of millions of people whose lives will be affected by the decisions made by the next President of the United States. You have your detractors and I have mine. But among yours are not just the liberal media and liberal politicians, but conservative politicians, friends, staffers, associates, family. Almost to a man they believe that you are one of the most brilliant people they have met – but also, almost to a man, they believe that you should not be the next President of the United States. You were in Washington for almost 20 years and you had a chance to be one of the great continuing powers for conservative policies. For whatever reasons, you left those positions. The next President of the United States must have a talent for organizational genius, discipline, self-sacrifice, leadership and the ability to make hard decisions. I simply don’t see those things on your resume. That’s why, in the face of all your brilliance and great ideas, I’m standing here on this stage tonight.

This probably won’t make a difference — but at least I wanted to get it off my chest and out of my dreams.

Best of luck to Governor Romney,

    Stephen W. Alley
