The Word of Mitch Lord – Week 15

I messed up. Last week I wrote Bryce Brown was the real deal. He’s not — or at least, not yet. Those two games, right now, appear to have been a fluke. In his first two career starts against the Panthers and Cowboys, Brown set the world on fire, rushing for over 150 yards and two scores in each game (9.37 yards per carry against the Panthers, 7.04 yards per carry against the Cowboys). Then, I made a huge mistake. I was tricked into thinking Brown could sustain this level of play against the top rushing defense in the league. I don’t think I’ve ever been more wrong in my life. Brown finished the game with six yards — yes, six, and on 12 carries. That’s a half a yard per carry. Are you kidding me? He followed that stinker up with another dreadful performance: 34 yards on 16 carries (2.13 yards per carry). If there’s one thing Brown is good at, it’s turning the ball over. Since taking over for McCoy, Brown has fumbled the ball three times. Really, four times, but one was credited to Nick Foles.
Hopefully my picks won’t be as catastrophic this week.
Quarterbacks I love in Week 15
Cam Newton, Panthers: So much for that sophomore slump. Newton has been just as good, if not better than he was last year. He’s not going to throw for as many yards or rush for as many touchdowns, but he has an equivalent touchdown percentage to last year’s (4.1), less interceptions this year through as many games (10, 16 last year), and more rushing yards per game this year and on the same amount of attempts per game as last year. He’s thrown a touchdown in six straight games and has been interception-less in five of those six games.
Russell Wilson, Seahawks: Wilson has flown under the radar this season, mainly due to the play of Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III. The funny thing is, Wilson has been just as good as both Luck and RG3. Wilson has tossed 20 touchdowns this year (two more than both Luck and Griffin), a 6.1 touchdown percentage (2.7% higher than Luck’s and 1% higher than Griffin’s), and just 9 interceptions (Luck has 18). The only thing Luck and Griffin have that Wilson doesn’t is a rushing touchdown. However, the Bills have allowed three rushing touchdowns to opposing quarterbacks this season — tied for second most in the league.
Quarterbacks I hate in Week 15
Matt Ryan, Falcons: Last week’s 30-20 head-scratching loss to the Panthers marked only the second loss of the season for the Falcons. In Ryan’s only game following a loss this season, he was horrific. While he did complete 61% of his passes and throw for 301 yards, he was picked off 5 times while failing to throw a touchdown pass. This week he’s facing a Giants defense that is second in the league with 20 interceptions. Ryan also could possibly be working without star receiver Roddy White — which could mean good things for Julio Jones owners.
Running backs I love in Week 15
Alfred Morris, Redskins: There’s a chance Griffin won’t play on Sunday. If that’s the case, Morris should expect to see a lot more carries. We all know the Browns aren’t the best at stopping the run (18th ranked run defense). Morris should be in for a solid day
Frank Gore, 49ers: He’s averaging less attempts per game than he did in each of the last two years, and he’s doing more with these carries (he’s averaging more yards per carry and per game). He hasn’t posted a lot of yards this year (he hasn’t cracked the 100-yard barrier since Week 7 and has only done so three times all season), but he’s found the end zone in back-to-back games and if San Fran’s defense can hold up against New England’s potent offense, Gore will get his fair share of chances at making it three straight games.
Running backs I hate in Week 15
Michael Turner, Falcons: It really tells you something when a guy has scored a touchdown in four straight games and still can’t score more than 12 fantasy points. Turner has rushed for less than 50 yards in four of his last five games (15, 46, 17, 83, 14) and less than 60 yards eight times this season. Do not start Michael Turner.
Stevan Ridley, Patriots: It’s the 49ers. The Niners are allowing the second fewest yards per carry (3.6) and have allowed a mere three rushing touchdowns all season. It’s a very risky play.
Wide receivers I love in Week 15
Pierre Garcon, Redskins: Whether Griffin plays or not, Garcon is the man in Washington and will definitely get his looks. The great thing about Garcon is what he does after he makes the catch: He leads the league in yards after the catch.
Randall Cobb, Packers: Green Bay does not run the ball. Jordy Nelson is out. Greg Jennings has been horrible in his first two games back. Cobb is a no-brainer.
Danario Alexander, Chargers: Alexander has scored five touchdowns in his last five games and at least five receptions and 70 yards each game over the same time frame. He’s surpassed Antonio Gates as Philip Rivers’ favorite target.
Marques Colston, Saints: The Buccaneers have the worst pass defense in the league and his quarterback is one of the best quarterbacks in the league. Need I say more?
Wide receivers I hate in Week 15
Larry Fitzgerald, Cardinals: Sorry, Larry. It’s not you, it’s your quarterback.
Greg Jennings, Packers: He hasn’t been too impressive since his return and Cobb will be drawing most of the attention from Rodgers. He’s a far too risky play in the playoffs. He has the potential to go off, but I just don’t see it.
