The Word of Mitch Lord – Fantasy Football Love/Hate for Week 7

Every week, we take the time to set our lineups and torment ourselves over which players to start and which players to sit. There are players who we know are almost always going to deliver a good performance week in and week out (Calvin Johnson, Aaron Rodgers, Ray Rice, Drew Brees, etc.). Then, there are players whom sit at the bottom of our bench and the only time they ever move is if they’re dropped. Finally, there are players we know are good, but just never know what we’re going to get from them (Chris Johnson, Michael Vick). It’s so frustrating. We want to start them, but they’ve failed us many times, yet have also won us many games. There’s just no telling what could happen with those guys. It’s constantly up in the air.
Players I Love for Week 7:
Robert Griffin III, QB, Redskins: Last year, the Giants lost two games to the Rex Grossman-led Redskins. Now Washington is equipped with one of the most athletic people to ever play the quarterback position. Stopping Griffin hasn’t been something many teams have been able to do. With the 12th-worst pass defense, the Giants likely won’t be able to stop him, either.
Sam Bradford, QB, Rams: The Packers, while is an even 3-3, just don’t look the same. It’s defense has allowed ten passing touchdowns through six games. In Bradford’s last game against Green Bay, the former first-overall pick completed 29 of 45 passes for 328 yards. The reason Bradford threw so much was because the Packers were leading 24-3 at halftime. With Steven Jackson struggling, Bradford could see a similar amount of attempts this time, as well.
Eli Manning, QB, Giants: The Redskins come into this division matchup with the worst pass defense in the NFL. Washington has allowed 328.3 passing yards per game and 15 passing touchdowns. This should be fun.
Matt Schaub, QB, Texans: “The Ravens” and “amazing defense” have been synonymous for years now, but, this year, that’s not the case. Baltimore owns the 10th-worst pass defense in the league, and now, have to manage without one of the best linebackers of all time, Ray Lewis, and a cornerback who hasn’t allowed a touchdown in almost two years, Ladarius Webb. Schaub and his go-to-guy, Andre Johnson, should have some success against this depleted Baltimore defense.
Chris Johnson, RB, Titans: I’m either a genius or a moron. First, let me just point out that the Bills have the worst run defense in the NFL — it’s allowed 173.5 yards per game on the ground and nine rushing touchdowns. Not only does Buffalo’s poor defense give Johnson a chance to succeed, but the former 2,000-yard rusher loves to play against the Bills. In Johnson’s last two games against Buffalo, he’s racked up 285 yards on 49 carries (5.8 yards per carry) and four touchdowns. If Johnson can’t do it against a defense as embarrassing as the Bills’, he won’t do it against anyone.
Darren McFadden, RB, Raiders: In McFadden’s last game against the Jaguars, he had 123 rushing yards on 16 attempts and two touchdowns and three receptions, 86 receiving yards, and a score. Through five games, the Jaguars have allowed 163 rushing yards per game and seven touchdowns. McFadden should dismantle this Jacksonville defense with ease.
Marques Colston, WR, Saints: Colston has been on fire his last two games: 18 receptions (nine each game), 284 yards, and 4 touchdowns (3 in Week 4). I think it’s safe to say that Colston is Brees’ favorite target, for the time being, that is. While the Buccaneers don’t allow many touchdowns through the air (4 all year), they do let up a ridiculous amount of yards each week. Colston should get a good chunk of those.
Players I Hate for Week 7
Cam Newton, QB, Panthers: One of the reasons Newton finds himself on my hate list this week is because he’s opposed by the 2nd-best pass defense in the league (Dallas). Another reason is he just isn’t the same player he was last year. Sophomore slump? Perhaps. Has the league figured him out? Perhaps. All I know, is he’s thrown just 4 touchdowns this year and 5 interceptions. Newton finished last season with a 4.1 touchdown%. Through five games, that number has dropped all the way down to 2.9. I sure hope the old Cam Newton comes back, because he was exciting to watch. This one? Not so much.
Matthew Stafford, QB, Lions: Before the season started, I firmly believed Stafford would be in the running for the top spot of the fantasy quarterback rankings for this year. Boy, was I wrong. Stafford and the entire Detroit Lions team have been extremely disappointing so far, and things to don’t seem as if they’ll be turning around anytime soon, as they take on the Bears on Monday Night Football. In terms of passing yards allowed per game, the Bears have the 14th-best defense. But the most eye-popping stat: The Bears’ defense has allowed 7 touchdowns all year (5 passing, 1 rushing, 1 return) and has scored 5 touchdowns (all on interceptions, 13 total interceptions). And in Stafford’s last game against Chicago, he threw four interceptions. No, thanks.
Shonn Greene, RB, Jets: Let’s relax. Greene has 378 rushing yards this year — 161 of them came last week. He has four touchdowns this year — 3 of them came last week. Greene will be brought back down to earth this week when he takes on New England, the 6th-best run defense in the league.
Mike LeShoure, RB, Lions: The rookie’s best performance came in his first career game back in Week 3 against an awful Titans run defense. Since then, he’s rushed for a mere 96 yards on 28 carries and hasn’t found the end zone. And now he has to deal with the Bears, which happens to have the best run defense in the NFL, allowing just 65.8 yards per game and have let up just one touchdown.
Jordy Nelson, WR, Packers: Nelson had a huge game last week against one of the best defenses in the league (9 receptions, 121 yards, 3 TD). But the pattern Nelson’s performances have followed this season suggest that he won’t do so well this week. Every time Nelson has a good performance, he follows it up with a stinker. In Week 2, he caught six passes for 84 yards and came back in Week 3 with two receptions for 19 yards. In Week 4, he caught eight passes for 93 yards and a touchdown and caught just two passes for 29 yards in Week 5. Never bet that a streak will end. Ever.
When it comes to deciding on your lineup, one minor slip-up could be that utterly frustrating difference between a win and a loss; choose wisely.
