Breaking Dawn Has a Bit More Bite

Overflowing with vampires, humans, and werewolves, the Twilight series’ fourth installment Breaking Dawn: Part 1 entertains and frightens audiences with its mysterious cliff hanging ending and emotional storyline.

Walking into the theatre, one would find teenage girls anxiously awaiting the film in a never-ending line, decked in “Team Jacob” and “Team Edward” shirts. Like most book-to-film movies, Breaking Dawn has two main audiences: readers or viewers.

Directed by Bill Condon, part one of the final Twilight movie follows the start of an unsuspecting marriage with a beautiful wedding, a weird honeymoon, and odd baby-scare. The twisted and strange love story of Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart; The Runaways, Into the Wild) and Edward Cullen continues to intrigue viewers, and for some, against their will. Robert Pattinson (Water for Elephants, Remember Me) demonstrates to be a perfect actor for romantic comedies, capturing the love of a human girl.

Speaking of perfect! When a film’s opening scene involves a shirtless Taylor Lautner, it is bound to create frenzy among teenage girls. And obviously everyone is very familiar with Lautner (Abduction, Valentine’s Day), who plays Bella’s werewolf best friend. He proves to be very helpful in Breaking Dawn, pretty much saving the day at various points in the movie.

Fans surprisingly clung to their seats, unlike previous Twilight flicks; maybe because of the fact that Bella is not conscious for most of the movie, or the fact that the plot involves more lively events than the other movies’ dreary events in Forks, Washington. We can at least appreciate the entertainment brought by Breaking Dawn.

Of course, this flick has its flaws. This movie creates a drastically different depiction varying from the novels, which doesn’t seem to pose a problem for most fans. Awkward acting moments give way for some awkward laughs, but that is always expected with the Twilight series. The dialogue also seems to get increasingly more pitiful as the films go on. However, the cast creates a certain closeness that is not very common for the series. It somehow seemed to all fit together in this film. The difference in the relationships of Bella, Edward, and even Jacob create a whole new identity for some of the characters.

The intense ending is exciting and thrilling and sets the bar high for part two of Breaking Dawn. But nevertheless, part one deserves three out of five stars.
