Race to Nowhere

Red, blue, silver and gold,
I pedal and pedal until my feet get old.
I scan the crowd for the face I see,
Every time I blink, every time I dream.
No light can brighten my dark road ahead,
Unless there are orbs that shine from the dead.

Red, blue, silver and gold,
I pedal and pedal until my feet get old.
The sweat pours down as I trudge up the hill,
But the pain subdues while my heart pounds still.
Why did you leave me to journey this alone,
When all my love for you was still unknown.

Red, blue, silver and gold,
I pedal and pedal until my feet get old.
The hilltop approaches, the end is near,
But all the while I wish you were here.
I hope the faster I pedal, the higher I go,
Because why else would the sun shine so low?

Red, blue, silver and gold,
I pedal and pedal until my feet get old.
I’m close to the end, but you’re still nowhere in sight,
I suppose you lied when you said souls took flight.
The chains rattle, my tires squeal,
Memories may fade, but death is real.

It stays with you, grief tears you apart,
No trophies or statues can heal your wounded heart.
They say that souls never quite leave the earth,
You are permanently here, from the moment of birth.
Yet why aren’t you able to be found,
Even after you’ve been etched into the ground.

Red, blue, silver and gold,
I pedal and pedal until my feet get old.
The race is over, I have won,
But victory is meaningless when you’ve lost your sun.
