For the theatre department, March is prime time for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Theatre in Our Schools (TIOS) <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to celebrate all things Theatre<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTheater in our schools is a time to really recognize the importance of theatre education not only within the theatre community but as a whole,\u201d North Penn senior Haruka Weir explained.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sponsored by the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Educational Theatre Association <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Alliance for Theatre and Education. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EdTA is the \u201cumbrella\u201d for all chapters of thespians including NPHS\u2019s chapter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The whole point of TIOS, as per <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltheatre.org\/advocacy\/tios\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EdTA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is to raise awareness and support for theatre at schools as well as help students develop various skills.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt really helps to develop students in their public speaking skills, and also focuses on the need to fund theatre education because oftentimes when school districts are making budget cuts, it\u2019s usually first to go,\u201d Weir said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The advocacy and outreach coordinators, Haruka Weir (Senior) and Ella Robinson (Junior), explained how North Penn has been a part of TIOS for a longtime. For Weir and Robinson themselves, this is their first year being the coordinators.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTheatre really shows you how to be expressive and captivate your audience,\u201d Weir said\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TIOS is so important because it helps students in theatre build connections between the unlikely.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt really teaches you how to interact with other people that you wouldn\u2019t find yourself interacting with,\u201d Robinson explained, \u201cIt builds a big community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Theatre has provided students a community where students can be themselves while learning important skills such as teamwork, self expression, and public speaking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students can help the theatre department at our school by showing up to their spring musical, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children of Eden, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and if they want to get involved, join the google classroom for thespians!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur general membership meetings, you can come to those things, but if you&#8217;re not coming to that, just recognizing that we have spirit days especially this month [every Friday],\u201d Weir said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The NPHS thespians chapter holds a birthday party for Thespis to commence at the end of TIOS month. NPHS has kept this tradition going in their own way! They have a fluffy stuffed statue of a goat named Thes\u201dPete\u201d and gave out little goats last year to the most \u2018Thespis\u2019 Enthusiastic thespians.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEven if you are thinking of joining theatre, like you\u2019re in 10th grade and you might want to join next year, just do it and see if you like it!
