{"id":33715,"date":"2020-09-21T14:25:42","date_gmt":"2020-09-21T18:25:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.knightcrier.org\/?p=33715"},"modified":"2020-09-21T21:49:22","modified_gmt":"2020-09-22T01:49:22","slug":"editorial-were-forgetting-to-never-forget","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.knightcrier.org\/opinion\/2020\/09\/21\/editorial-were-forgetting-to-never-forget\/","title":{"rendered":"EDITORIAL: We&#8217;re forgetting to &#8220;Never Forget&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s December 1942.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A cattle car is slowly w<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inding to a stop, lightly tapping the end of a railroad track in front of one of the most notorious places on Earth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Jews spill out of the cattle car, many getting their first glance at what will soon become their final resting place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without even mentioning the name, I would assume the vast majority of Americans know exactly where that cattle car stopped. I would be wrong.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this week, I stumbled upon a deeply upsetting nationwide survey conducted by The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, or Claims Conference (CC). The CC\u2019s survey was branded as <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.claimscon.org\/millennial-study\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cthe first-ever 50-state survey on Holocaust knowledge among Millennials and Gen Z.\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The survey was randomly conducted with approximately 11,000 individuals &#8211; 200 from each state &#8211; between the ages of 18-39. It was meant to get a general sense of how much, or little, Millennials and Gen Z know about the Holocaust. The results are appalling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">63% of respondents didn\u2019t know that 6 million Jews died in the Holocaust. In fact, 36% thought it was less than 2 million. 48% couldn\u2019t name a concentration camp. 40% couldn\u2019t even name what war the Holocaust was associated with (22% thought WWI, 10% weren\u2019t sure, 5% thought the Civil War, and 3% thought the Vietnam War).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pennsylvania\u2019s numbers weren\u2019t any better; 59% didn\u2019t know 6 million Jews were killed, 33% believed it was less than 2 million, and 40% of survey respondents did not know what Auschwitz was.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We promised to never forget. We are failing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With World War II having ended 75 years ago, there are incredibly few Holocaust survivors left. Vital information, stories, and ties to the Holocaust will soon be gone. Generation Z has a moral obligation to honor these survivors and the millions who were executed. We can not continue the dangerous patterns shown in this survey and allow us to collectively forget what happened to the Jewish community and the world in the 1940s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If more and more of us forget, then, as shown through the survey results, Naziism and Holocaust denial will run rampant. 49% said they\u2019ve seen Holocast denial on social media, and at least 44% in every state reported seeing Nazi symbols in their community or online in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the past 5 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As former director of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Walter Reich <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2020\/01\/seventy-five-years-after-auschwitz-anti-semitism-is-on-the-rise\/605452\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">laid out in his piece marking the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201canti-Semitism has returned, in part, because the general public\u2019s knowledge about the Holocaust\u2014of what exactly it was, who exactly was murdered in it, how many were killed, and how anti-Semitism spawned it\u2014has diminished.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If such large percentages of people are uneducated about the Holocaust, then there will be an alarming scarcity of those who are knowledgeable enough to speak out and correct those who perpetrate lies denying the reality of Hitler\u2019s orchestrated executions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Reich reflects on the rise of anti-semitism so soon after the end of the Holocaust, he wonders \u201cCould \u201cnever again,\u201d vowed so solemnly and so repeatedly after the Holocaust, revert to \u201cyet again\u201d?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m not asking everyone to become a Holocaust expert, just to educate yourselves and know the very basics of what happened, so \u201cyet again\u201d never becomes a reality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go read <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westada.org\/cms\/lib\/ID01904074\/Centricity\/Domain\/2311\/NIGHT-FULL-TEXT-PDF.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Night&#8221; by Holocaust Survivor and Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See the alarming rise of antisemitism <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/rise-in-anti-semitic-incidents-goes-beyond-recent-violent-attacks-11576611407\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learn something by visiting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ushmm.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Listen to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/last-auschwitz-survivors-speak-we-havent-won-but-weve-taught-our-grandkids\/#gs.g4n0z2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the survivors.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never forget.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s December 1942.
